PREP FOOTBALL: Post Falls, Lake City fall

| September 9, 2023 1:20 AM

SUNNYSIDE, Wash. — Once Sunnyside took the football away at the end of the half, the Grizzlies seized the momentum from the Post Falls Trojans for the rest of the evening.

Rylee Gonzalez returned an interception 28 yards for a touchdown with 20 seconds remaining in the half, then held on late for a 41-35 win over the previously unbeaten Trojans on Friday night.

Post Falls junior Isaac McKeown scored on a 2-yard touchdown run with 1:04 remaining, but Sunnyside recovered the ensuing onside kick and ran out the clock.

“I was really pleased with how we battled and gave ourselves a chance,” Post Falls coach Blaine Bennett said. “We were in right until the end, but it seemed like we were a score behind the entire second half.”

Post Falls finished with three turnovers in the game. Eli Fernandez returned an interception 28 yards for a touchdown with 5:03 remaining to give the Grizzlies a 41-27 lead.

“Offensively, when we take care of the ball, we’re a solid offense,” Bennett said. “Defensively, we had to defend the pass on a lot of snaps tonight. Sunnyside did a good job of throwing the ball.”

Post Falls (2-1) hosts University of Spokane Valley next Friday.

Emmett 17

Lake City 13

MOSCOW — Lake City had its chances, especially late, but 4A Emmett had the better of it in the trenches overall in a victory over the 5A Timberwolves in nonleague play Friday night at the Kibbie Dome.

Trailing 17-6 after three quarters, Lake City (1-2) made it a one-score game when Avrey Cherry hit Michael Martindale down the right sideline for a 42-yard touchdown — on fourth down and 24 — to pull the Timberwolves within 17-13 with 3:21 left.

Lake City stopped Emmett on downs at the T-Wolf 35, but was unable to capitalize, doomed by a sack and three incompletions.

“We are still figuring out how to win,” first-year Lake City coach Byron Hout said. “They definitely have some size up front; they won the pound-for-pound battle. But like I told the team, we did get better today.”

Quentin Smith eclipsed the 100-yard mark on the ground for Emmett (3-0), and his 1-yard run capped the opening drive of the second half and put the Huskies up 17-6.

In the second quarter, Emmett took advantage of a short field to score first, on Isaac Brennan’s 27-yard run.

Lake City answered on the ensuing kickoff when Chase Walker, seemingly bottled up, squirted free and raced for a 77-yard touchdown to pull the T-Wolves within 7-6.

After Jacob Hill made a terrific leaping catch over top of an Emmett defender for a 47-yard gain, Lake City turned the ball over on downs at the Emmett 22.

Freshman quarterback Jax Banuelos connected on two big completions to put Emmett in scoring territory. He was intercepted by Martindale inside the 5, but Lake City was called for pass interference. The Huskies kicked a 26-yard field goal with 2 seconds left to take a 10-6 lead into the locker room.

Lake City was intercepted deep in Emmett territory late in the third quarter. The Huskies began marching again on the ground, but Garrett Leonard forced a fumble and the T-Wolves recovered at their 20 to keep Emmett from putting the game away.

“I think our guys believed,” Hout said. “There was a place where we could have given up the fight. Our defense gave us a chance all day. We’ll take that into the future.”

Lake City plays at Bishop Kelly next Saturday.

West Valley 21

Lakeland 10

RATHDRUM — Already missing starting quarterback Haydon Benson, the Hawks lost his backup Jace Taylor and starting running back Lovie Weil to injury in a nonleague loss to the Eagles of Spokane Valley.

“I don’t know how much better we’ve got over the last three weeks,” said Lakeland coach Mike Schroeder, whose team opened with a 17-7 win over Preston in Butte, Mont., on Aug. 18. “I think we got exposed a little bit. We’re playing OK physically, but mentally we’re not there. We didn’t handle our business in the first half and got into a hole and didn’t come out of it. The boys weren’t mentally prepared and didn’t take it seriously this week, and that’s my fault. We’ve got a lot of good players, but we’re not in rhythm right now. We’ve got some things to clean up.”

Further information was not available.

Lakeland (3-1) travels to Coeur d’Alene next Friday.

McCall-Donnelly 31

Timberlake 26

SPIRIT LAKE — The host Tigers jumped out to a 14-0 lead, but mistakes caught up to them in a loss to the Vandals in nonleague play at Van Tuinstra Memorial Field.

“A lot of mistakes on our part,” Timberlake coach Kelly Amos said. “You can't have five turnovers and expect to win a ball game. And we can’t only rush for 100 yards. They were just more physical than us. And the mental errors that cost us.”

Cole Meidinger connected with Jacob Yetter on a 75-yard touchdown pass, and Vaughn Higgins scored from a yard out to give Timberlake (2-2) a 14-0 lead.

McCall-Donnelly (3-0) took an 18-14 lead after three quarters.

Yetter caught a 9-yard pass from Meidinger to put Timberlake up 20-18 early in the fourth quarter.

With 2 minutes left, Jeremy Hurlburt blocked a punt, Luke Schell recovered and Cooper Lenz ran it in from a yard out to pull Timberlake within five.

An onside kick was unsuccessful, and McCall-Donnelly got the first down it needed to run out the clock.

McCall-Donnelly outgained Timberlake 409-292, including 206-109 on the ground.

“They threw the ball well,” Amos said of the Vandals, “and we didn’t do a good job tackling in open space.”

Meidinger was 10 of 20 for 183 yards and two TDs, both to Yetter, who had nine catches for 178 yards.

Maddox Arnold of McCall-Donnelly was 14 of 30 for 203 yards and a touchdown, and ran for 121 yards and two scores on 15 carries.
