PREP ROUNDUP: Lakeland hits one early, runs past Pullman

RATHDRUM — It’s been an adjustment for Lakeland coach Mike Schroeder in his second season at the helm.

Throw in not being able to watch film on an opponent quite yet, Schroeder has had to get creative.

“Playing three games without a film has really handicapped us,” Schroeder said. “I’ve never been in a situation where we’ve played three games and our opponents were playing their opener. We’ve been going off last year’s YouTube highlights, and it’s hard to prepare a team. We’ve tried to be structured, and it’s hurt us.”

Lakeland junior running back Lovie Weil ran for three touchdowns for the Hawks, who beat the Pullman Greyhounds 42-21 in a nonleague game at Corbit Field.

Lakeland opened the game on a 65-yard touchdown pass from Roan Reilly to Ezra Benson.

“We just hit one there,” Schroeder said. “We’ve been able to run the ball somewhat well. We noticed they play soft in the back and load the box, so we tried to take advantage of it.”

Lakeland scored 29 straight points to take a 35-14 lead late in the third quarter.

“Our defense has struggled a little bit, but really played well in the second half,” Schroeder said. “We’ll have to continue to build on that.”

Lakeland hosts West Valley next Friday.

SPOKANE — Caius Tebbe scored on a three-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter for the Tigers, who fell behind 31-0 at halftime before rallying in a loss to the Highlanders.

“We came out flat and just didn’t respond,” Timberlake coach Kelly Amos said. “They jumped out big on us. We started to play some football in the second half, but it’s tough to come back from that.”

Shadle Park, in its season opener, recovered an onside kick and ran out the clock after Tebbe’s touchdown.

“We just couldn’t stop them,” Amos said. “They’re a bigger school and have athletes and we didn’t do a very good job against them. Kudos to Shadle. They were firing and put a ton of pressure on us.”

Jacob Yetter had nine catches for 101 yards for Timberlake (2-1), which hosts McCall-Donnelly next Friday.

The Wildcats were more competitive in the second half after making a few defensive adjustments to counter North Fremont’s multi-option scheme.
