STATE CROSS COUNTRY: Blue morning for Cd'A ... Coeur d'Alene boys weather cold, claim first state 5A title since 2011

| October 29, 2023 1:25 AM

POCATELLO — It wasn’t the best day for a few of the Coeur d’Alene boys.

But by the end of it, they were happy to be feeling blue again.

The Viking boys, with their usual strong pack running, won their first state 5A title on Saturday at the Portneuf Wellness Complex on Saturday, and junior Max Cervi-Skinner (sixth), senior Jacob King (eighth), sophomore Mitchell Rietze (10th), senior Lachlan May (11th) and junior Zack Cervi-Skinner (16th) earned state medalist honors for finishing in the top 20.

Temperatures were estimated to be at 28 degrees at race time, a far cry from last week’s regional meet when it was 78 degrees at Farragut State Park in Athol.

“It was a group effort from the coaches, runners and parents,” said Coeur d’Alene coach Cathy Compton, who now has six team titles, four with the girls (2004, 2012, 2013 and 2014) and two with the boys. “It was brutal. But we did everything smart from the warmup and wearing the proper stuff during the race. But these guys are tough North Idaho boys. They’re used to running in this. They’re just tough kids.”

Coeur d'Alene finished with 45 points. Rocky Mountain of Meridian was second with 60.

Senior Jacob King, who was eighth, credited the performance of Rietze with getting the job done for the Vikings.

“We knew what we were capable of,” King said. “It was really running for each other and not an individual race. Mitchell, our normally fifth guy, he did a great job to finish third (for Coeur d’Alene) and make up the ground we needed. He’s really the reason why we pulled it off.”

5A: Coeur d'Alene, ranked 10th nationally by DyeStat, last won a team title in 2011 at Eagle Island State Park.

“We had a couple of kids with an off day, but in just about every other meet, we had another step up,” Compton said. “Mitch stepped up and it was pretty impressive to see. All of our kids ran well today and did what we had to do to finish. It’s just about finishing first and that’s the ultimate goal.”

Girls state medalists were Coeur d’Alene sophomore Olivia May (11th), Post Falls junior Kaylynn Misner (12th), Post Falls sophomore Talia Bonville (13th) and Lake City junior Hazel Kunkel (17th).

Timberline of Boise won its first team title, beating five-time champion Boise for the girls title.

Timberline freshman Ruby Ihmels and Meridian junior Nate Stadlander won individual titles.

4A: Sandpoint seniors Nathan Roche (18th) and Grace Rookey (18th) earned medalist honors for the Bulldogs for finishing in the top 20.

Skyline senior Nelah Roberts won her fourth straight individual title in 17:18.06, breaking the previous meet record of Mattalyn Geddes of Twin Falls (17:30.09) from 2019.

Idaho Falls senior Luke Athany won the boys race, his first individual title.

Preston won its third straight girls team title, with Idaho Falls winning its first title since winning three straight from 2017-2019.

3A: As soon as Timberlake senior Jacob Barnhart’s bid for a second straight 3A title fell short, he did the next best thing.

Helped push his boys team to a third-place showing.

Barnhart, who won last year’s meet at Lewiston Orchards, finished fourth Saturday in 16 minutes, 23.04 seconds.

“Jacob has been a fantastic leader for us the last several years,” Timberlake coach Shawn Lawler said. “He really leads the way in terms of his work ethic and he’s just a fantastic kid. He finished, then was immediately by the finish line cheering on the rest of his team. He’s a selfless kid. He’ll be missed, but not replaced.”

Barnhart led the race early, but fell off in the final two miles.

“It was a fast course, and I took the lead maybe too early on,” Barnhart said. “Some guys were on me and they picked it up and it kind of dropped me.”

Timberlake was fourth at state in 2022.

“Our main goal was to bring home the state championship,” Barnhart said. “Throughout the season, we had some injuries and haven’t really been at full force. We know we could have done better, but I’m really proud of these guys. It’s a big deal. It’s really cool.”

Timberlake sophomore Vanessa McLachlan, in her first state meet, finished third in the girls race.

“She ran a really intelligent race, especially for a first-year runner,” Lawler said. “She was seventh or eighth in the first mile, and was just catching people and was almost second. The maturity that she showed, and running a race like that, really speaks volumes.”

Other area state medalists were Coeur d’Alene Charter senior Nathan Russell (fifth), Timberlake freshman Caleb Royce (eighth), Coeur d’Alene Charter senior Nolan Oyler (20th) and Coeur d’Alene Charter sophomore Annabelle Carr (fourth).

Snake River (girls) and South Fremont (boys) won team titles.

South Fremont senior Sage Lyon won the girls race and McCall-Donnelly senior George Speirs won the boys, their first individual titles.

2A: Kellogg senior Makai Peak finished sixth to earn medalist honors.

Junior Brayden Lamanna (14th) and junior Colm McLaimtaig (18th) were medalists for Priest River.

Soda Springs won its second straight girls team title. North Fremont won the boys title.

Corbin Johnson (North Fremont) and Bella Spencer (West Jefferson) won individual titles.

1A: Rockland (boys) and Raft River (girls) claimed team titles.

It was the second straight title for Raft River. Rockland ended a three-year run by Victory Charter.

Raft River senior Allie Black won her third straight individual title.

Victory Charter senior Luke Stockett won the boys title.
