POST FALLS — Two Washington men are being held on $500,000 bail after police reported finding 16 pounds of methamphetamine inside their vehicle.

Kootenai County Sheriff’s deputies arrested 20-year-old Guillermo M. Duarte and 22-year-old Jose E. Ramos, both of Yakima, Wash., after a traffic stop late Monday night in the area of I-90 and Pleasantview Road in Post Falls.

Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris said Wednesday that he was alarmed by the large quantity of methamphetamine.

“Substance abuse, the demand for the drug and our porous border are having an impact on Kootenai County and the region,” Norris said.

The arrests came after a K-9 unit conducted an external sniff of the vehicle during the traffic stop and alerted on the vehicle, according to a news release issued by the sheriff’s office. A subsequent search of the vehicle reportedly yielded about 16 pounds of methamphetamine.

Police arrested Duarte and Ramos on charges of trafficking methamphetamine. They remained Wednesday in Kootenai County jail.
