CALDWELL — Beating the defending state champions in the first round was an impressive feat.

But knocking off the top seed, that proved to be too much for Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy in the semifinals of the state 3A girls soccer tournament.

The fourth-seeded Panthers, bidding to return to the state title game for the first time since 2020, lost 3-0 to the Diggers on Friday afternoon at Vallivue High.

Thunder Ridge 0

EAGLE — Junior Jacob Molina had two goals and an assist as the fifth-seeded Timberwolves bounced back from their first loss of the season on Thursday to take out the top-seeded Titans of Idaho Falls in a loser-out game at Eagle High.

“It was a nice bounceback game for us,” Lake City coach Kevin Jump said. “We were a bit hobbled today with injuries and we had some substitutes step up while other regulars played different positions. Our midfielders (Connor Jump, Noah Waddell, Philip Du, and Beckham Dodge) just outworked a very strong Thunder Ridge midfield. That was about as dominant of a performance as you will see in a 5A state playoff match.”

Lake City (16-1-1) will play No. 7 Centennial (13-7-1) for the consolation title today at 9 a.m. PDT.

Jump said Lake City’s defense was exceptional again on Friday.

Michael Chan’s goal late in the first half put the T-Wolves on the board, and they never looked back.

“Once we scored, there was a huge relief as our back four and midfield were on top of their games. Thunder Ridge has fast and exceptionally gifted attacking players, and our defensive pressure just absolutely shut them down. Thunder Ridge ended up with one shot on goal — and for us to limit the No. 1 seed to just one shot on goal speaks for itself.”

First half — 1, LC, Michael Chan (Jacob Molina), 37:00. Second half — 2, LC, Molina (Greyson Kortus), 69:00. 3, LC, Molina (unassisted), 78:00.
