5A BOYS

EAGLE — Heading into the state 5A boys soccer tournament, Lake City had allowed just three goals all season, and had never trailed in a match.

Thursday was a different day for the Timberwolves.

With the game scoreless most of the morning, fifth-seeded Lake City allowed two goals in the final 10 minutes and fell 2-0 to the fourth-seeded Rocky Mountain Grizzlies of Meridian in a state quarterfinal game at Eagle High.

Rylan McPherson scored in the 74th minute, and Adrian Jimenez added one in the 76th for Rocky (14-2-1), which plays No. 8 seed Eagle (12-5-3) today at noon PDT in a semifinal.

"It was back and forth for the entire game," Lake City coach Kevin Jump said. "Unfortunately, we gave up a goal in the 70th minute. We were pushing for an equalizer and they caught us on a counter-attack in the last two minutes. It was a very competitive game, with neither team allowing many opportunities either way. As the game progressed, it just felt like whichever team scored first was going to win. Our guys battled hard and went toe-to-toe with Boise's league and district champions. I'm proud of our efforts."

Lake City (15-1-0), bidding for its first state title since 1998, plays top-seeded Thunder-Ridge of Idaho Falls (13-2-3) today at 8 a.m. PDT at Eagle in a consolation round game.

CALDWELL — The fourth-seeded Panthers, at state for the 11th straight season, overcame a slow start to beat the fifth-seeded and defending champion Cutthroat trout in a state quarterfinal game at Vallivue High.

Senior Alexa Sheppard had two goals and an assist for Coeur d’Alene Charter (15-1-0), which plays top-seeded Sugar-Salem (19-0-0) in a semifinal game today at noon PDT.

Sun Valley scored in the fourth minute of the game, which kicked off at 8 a.m. PDT.

Sheppard’s second goal of the game, just before halftime, but the Panthers in the lead to stay.

“We had a very rocky start,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Stacy Smith said. “Sun Valley came at us with everything they had for the first 20 minutes of the game. It took us a bit to settle in and feel comfortable playing how we know to play. I’m very proud of how the girls responded. Sun Valley is a great team that connects well and has some speed up top. We were able to manage their possession and then we counterattacked with some success. It’s tough going up against last year’s champions in the first round. However, I knew the girls were motivated and even though we went down early I knew you couldn’t count us out. This group has grit.”

Junior Leah Karlsen had a goal and an assist for Coeur d’Alene Charter.
