PREP VOLLEYBALL: Kellogg punches ticket to state

KELLOGG — Senior Maddie Cheney had 14 kills and three aces for the top-seeded Kellogg Wildcats in a 25-23, 25-9, 26-24 win over the second-seeded St. Maries Lumberjacks in the 2A District 1-2 championship match on Wednesday at Andrews Gymnasium.

Kellogg (12-4) advances to state next Friday and Saturday at Lakeland High in Rathdrum.

Cheney served the final three points of the third set for the Wildcats.

“Maddie was absolutely who we wanted serving in that spot,” Kellogg coach Stephanie Batchelder said. “She’s been in so many big matches in her career. I had no doubt she could handle the pressure.”

In the second-place match, third-seeded Orofino bounced back from a 2-1 deficit to elimiate the Lumberjacks 25-21, 16-25, 23-25, 25-15, 17-15.

Orofino (10-8) will face Nampa Christian, the third-place team from District 3 in a state play-in match on Saturday at Grangeville High.

St. Maries finished 17-9.

Kellogg lost in a play-in match last season, its first since dropping to the 3A classification.

Brielle Hei had 14 digs, Macy Jerome 14 digs and two blocks, Dani Hendrickson 21 assists and three aces for Kellogg in the championship match.

Earlier, Orofino eliminated Priest River in five sets. Scores were not available.

SPIRIT LAKE — Jesi Kitchin had six kills, Sophia Soumas nine assists for the Tigers in a 25-16, 25-23, 25-17 loss to the Badgers, who swept the best-of-3 3A District 1 tournament to advance to the state tournament.

Bonners Ferry (10-10) will compete at state starting next Friday at Coeur d'Alene High.

Hailey Armes had five kills and two aces, Linley Howard four kills and two blocks and Diana Nelson five blocks and two kills for Timberlake, which finished 4-13.

• NOTE: Tonight's 5A Region 1 second-place match between Lewiston and host Post Falls will begin at 5:30 at The Arena.

The match was moved up due to the Lake-City vs. Post Falls football game, which begins at 7 at Post Falls High.
