| October 11, 2023 1:15 AM

SANDPOINT — Junior setter Olivia Zazuetta had 22 assists and three aces in her return after missing a couple of weeks due to injury, and the Lakeland Hawks knocked off the Sandpoint Bulldogs 25-20, 25-18, 23-25, 25-11 in Inland Empire League play Tuesday night at Les Rogers Court.

“It was great to have Liv back on the court tonight,” Lakeland coach Kelsie Badger said. “She served aggressively and set the ball well tonight.”

Ziya Munyer had 18 kills and eight blocks for Lakeland (21-7, 6-2 IEL), which had already wrapped up the top seed to next week’s 4A Region 1 tournament. Landree Simon added 14 kills and 22 digs, Addy Hocking 24 digs and four aces, Ella Terzulli 26 assists, Lila Kiefer five blocks.

“Ziya's unwavering determination and knack for finding the gaps in the defense proved crucial in securing the win for us tonight,” Badger said. “Landree's consistency and ability to adapt to various game situations help keep our team alive tonight.”

Badger also cited Makena Cleveland for her three huge blocks, as well as the play of Layla Benson, who finished with five kills, eight digs and three blocks.

Terzulli served seven straight points in the fourth set for Lakeland.

“While Ziya and Landree stole the spotlight with their offensive play, Addy played a pivotal role in the team's defense,” Badger said. “Addy's exceptional digging skills and keen reflexes allowed her to retrieve seemingly impossible balls and send them back into play. Her incredible agility and anticipation of the opponent's hits kept the rally going and provided her team with valuable opportunities for our hitters to attack.”

For Sandpoint (4-8, 3-5), Vivian Platte had 12 kills, Haley Swaim 27 assists, Audrey Petruso 14 digs and three aces, Gretta Beck three aces.

Sandpoint, the No. 2 seed, will play host to third-seeded Moscow next Tuesday in the loser-out first round of the 4A Region 1 tournament. The winner plays at Lakeland next Thursday at 6 p.m. in the championship match for the region’s lone berth to state.
