PREP SOCCER: Heartbreaker for Hawks

| October 10, 2023 1:15 AM

4A REGION 1 BOYS

MOSCOW — Lakeland’s season came to a bizarre end Monday.

With some 2 minutes left in the second, sudden-death, overtime, the Hawks’ Austin Parks scored on a penalty kick and Lakeland players and coaches rushed the field in celebration.

However, the linesman ruled a Lakeland player entered the penalty area before the kick, nullified the goal, and gave the ball to Moscow for a free kick.

Moments later, Moscow won the shootout 5-3 to advance to play at Sandpoint on Wednesday for the regional title and the lone berth to state.

“It was a weird, weird situation,” Lakeland coach Nick Haynes said. “We thought we should have been able to take the PK again, but they gave them a free kick. Kind of a disappointing way to end.”

Parks, Ethan Hunt and Luke Fritts scored in the shootout for Lakeland. Moscow, shooting first, made all five of its PKs. Lakeland, bidding for its first trip to state since 2015, missed on its second try.

“That would have been a great moral victory for these guys,” Haynes said. “I’m proud of the boys, they played hard. It was a disappointing way to lose.”

“I wish the score would reflect how these girls play,” St. Maries coach Amber Morris said. “They have been one of my most coachable teams. We would practice something, then in the next game, you would see the girls using it out on the field.”
