STATE 5A/4A GOLF: A few strokes here and there ... Lake City frosh Lambert finishes one stroke out of playoff in 5A; Coeur d'Alene boys third, girls second; Mire fourth as Sandpoint's girls third

| October 8, 2023 1:25 AM

Not that Lake City freshman Trey Lambert had a bad weekend — he was the only player under par both days — but …

“He felt he left a couple of shots out and had a few he should have made,” second-year Lake City boys coach Kelly Reed said. “He was just fantastic for two days.”

Lambert tied for third, and took home the fourth-place medal in a card-off, at the state 5A golf tournament Saturday at the Lewiston Country Club.

Lambert shot a 3-under 141 at the two-day tournament, and finished one stroke out of a playoff.

Lake City senior Max Hosfeld was seventh with a 71-73—144.

“I couldn’t be happier for Max to see him come out like that,” Reed said. “There’s a lot of pressure and playing at state isn’t easy. I’m really proud of both of them.”

Coeur d'Alene's boys made a strong bid for their first state title since 2004, and sixth overall, finished third, five strokes back of champion Boise.

“Anytime you’re talking about all the schools in Idaho, especially the 5A division, third or anywhere up there is impressive,” fifth-year Coeur d’Alene boys coach Chase Bennett said. “It wasn’t the coaches and team goal that we had in mind, but we’re never disappointed and always grateful for placing at state.”

Despite non seniors on the Coeur d’Alene girls team, the Vikings finished runner-up at 355-349—708 — the Vikings' best finish in program history.

“It’s super coming away with that finish,” second-year Coeur d’Alene girls coach Jeff Lake said. “But we’re already set on next year and that blue trophy.”

Sandpoint's girls, led by Taylor Mire's fourth-place finish, took third in 4A.

5A: Lambert, who finished an hour and a half before the other top golfers came in, posted a 1-under 71 on Saturday.

“He’s motivated for next year already,” Reed said. “Both him and Max, they’d hit a bad shot, but you didn’t see them get rattled. It was really impressive to see a freshman navigate it that way.”

Coeur d’Alene’s boys, two shots off the lead after Friday’s round, finished third with a 301-303—604.

The top six boys teams were separated by a mere nine strokes.

Coeur d’Alene finished third at state last fall, as well as in the spring of 2022, before 5A and 4A golf began a two-year trial run in the fall.

Junior Grant Potter improved nine strokes to finish fifth for Coeur d’Alene.

“With golf, sometimes you don’t have a great day that first day,” Bennett said. “But I thought he’d turn it around. In the second round, he was hitting the ball nearly perfectly, especially off the tee. He just did a great job. Our seniors Trey (Nipp) and Jameson (Dale) showed a lot of good leadership and work ethic to show our younger guys what it takes to be successful.”

Coeur d'Alene's girls shot 708. Rocky Mountain won with a 656.

Coeur d’Alene’s girls' previous best at state was fourth in 2021 at Avondale Golf Club.

Stella Deitz of Coeur d'Alene finished eighth.

A decision is upcoming whether Idaho will continue to have its biggest schools play golf in the fall.

“Our girls are excited and already talking about next year,” Lake said. “They don’t want to take 18 months off and can’t wait to get back on the course. It’s been amazing to see their journey this season.”

Rocky Mountain of Meridian won its fourth straight girls title (335-321—656).

Boise claimed the boys title (299-300—599).

Eagle’s Beau Sahr won in a playoff for boys medalist.

Timberline’s Ella Arzen won the girls individual title.

4A: Mire, a junior, shot 82-79—161 at the University of Idaho Golf Course in Moscow.

“All five of our girls finished in the upper half,” Sandpoint coach Mike Deprez said. “We will use all the resources available to help accomplish our goal of another trophy (in 2024). This is a great team with five great girls.”

Bishop Kelly of Boise swept the team titles.

Jaxson Wright of Vallivue (74-71—145) and Cara Carter of Bishop Kelly (75-71—146) won individual titles.
