PREP SOCCER: Lake City girls top Coeur d'Alene, to play Lewiston for regional title
• GIRLS
COEUR d’ALENE — Third-seeded Lake City made the most of its two shots on goal on Saturday at Viking Field.
Freshman Riley Brazle scored in the 22nd minute and senior Gabbie Henkle added an unassisted goal in the 25th minute for the Timberwolves, who beat the second-seeded Coeur d’Alene Vikings 2-0 in the opening round of the 5A Region 1 tournament at Coeur d’Alene High.
“I couldn’t be prouder of our girls,” Coeur d’Alene coach Andy Vredenburg said. “We controlled most of the game, but had two miscommunications and they scored on them. We had a lot of good chances, especially in the second half, but just couldn’t put them away.”
Coeur d’Alene finishes 6-4-2. Lake City won all three meetings with the Vikings this season.
Acaja Scott had 10 saves for Lake City (8-6), which travels to Lewiston for the regional title game on Tuesday at Walker Field.
“Acaja made two really good saves that kept them in it,” Vredenburg said. “We never gave up, and as a coach, that’s all you can ask for. Unfortunately, it didn’t go our way.”
Top-seeded Lewiston beat No. 4 Post Falls 9-0 in the other opening round match.

“We played well through our midfield today, and Elijah was a big part of that,” Coeur d’Alene coach Braden Ridgewell said. “We’ve really started to connect in the middle, and for Elijah to get a goal and two assists, he’s definitely stepping into his captain position and had quite the game today.”
