STATE 5A, 4A GOLF: Lake City's Lambert, Coeur d'Alene boys tied for third in 5A, Viking girls second after first day

| October 7, 2023 1:17 AM

It’s crowded at the top of the state 5A boys golf race after the first day at Lewiston Country Club.

How close? One or two swings today could be the difference for six teams.

Lake City freshman Trey Lambert shot a 2-under 70 and is tied for third place in the state 5A boys golf tournament at Lewiston Country Club on Friday.

Coeur d’Alene’s boys are also third with a 301, two shots behind co-leaders Eagle and Boise after the first day. Timberline and Middleton are tied for fourth at 304.

“I think everyone is so equally matched right now,” fifth-year Coeur d’Alene boys golf coach Chase Bennett said. “They’re talented. We’re talented. Tomorrow is setting up to be an exciting day.”

Lake City senior Max Hosfeld is tied for fifth with a 71 along with Coeur d’Alene’s Jameson Dale.

“I was super pleased with Trey and Max’s effort,” second-year Lake City boys coach Kelly Reed said. “To shoot a 70 and 71 respectively, and they’d say they left a few shots out there. The pressure of state is unique and for them to finish like that was fantastic.”

“Jameson just went all senior today, and that’s what you’d want him to do,” Bennett said. “Everyone played how I’d expected them to play, but there’s definitely room to get better. If they can do that over 18 holes tomorrow, we’ll give ourselves a chance.”

Beau Sahr of Eagle leads the boys tournament after a 5-under 67. Ella Arzen leads the girls tournament with an even-par 72.

Coeur d’Alene’s girls, paced by sophomore Stella Dietz in ninth place (86), is second with a 355.

We had some high expectations and are right where we thought we’d be,” second-year Coeur d’Alene girls coach Jeff Lake said. “We’re a young team with three sophomores and two juniors, so it will be interesting to see how they do tomorrow. Stella’s goal is to be in the top five, and we’re in a good spot as a team and feeling good. Either way, we’re going to leave here successful.”

Rocky Mountain of Meridian, which has won the past three state titles, leads the girls tournament with a 335.

In the 4A tournament at University of Idaho Golf Course in Moscow, Twin Falls leads the boys tournament with a 312, followed by Bishop Kelly with a 313. Bishop Kelly and Twin Falls are tied for the girls lead with a 333.

Sandpoint’s Taylor Mire is tied for fourth with an 82. The Bulldogs are third with a 363.

The tournaments conclude today.
