PREP VOLLEYBALL: Coeur d'Alene wins Volleyball 4 the Cure match, takes control of IEL

| October 4, 2023 1:25 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — On a night when cancer survivors were honored, Coeur d’Alene High picked up a much-needed volleyball victory — and put the Vikings in the driver’s seat to be the top seed to the 5A Region 1 tournament.

Senior Olivia Naccarato and junior Kaydence Green controlled the net with nine and six blocks, respectively, as Coeur d’Alene handed Post Falls its first Inland Empire League loss, 25-21, 25-16, 25-21, and moved into the league lead ahead of the Trojans.

“Olivia and Kaydence both had a huge night,” Coeur d’Alene coach Carly Curtis said. “We just played a very solid, controlled game. Our defense did an amazing job, they were scrappy, and did a good job so we could run our offense. Our serves were tough, got them out of system. Our blocking did a good job lining up with their hittiers, which made them hit right to our defense. Very proud of these girls, they played with a lot of heart.”

Proceeds from Tuesday’s Volleyball for the Cure cancer awareness match went to a group that helps families of children suffering from cancer.

Junior Paisley Goings had nine kills, 10 digs and two aces for Coeur d’Alene (18-5, 7-1 IEL), which can lock up the top seed to regionals with a win at Lewiston on Thursday. Post Falls (25-5, 6-1) beat Coeur d’Alene 3-1 on Sept. 5, but the Vikings have the tiebreaker over the Trojans with four sets won to three in their two league meetings.

Lizzy Hardy had 16 assists, Bailey Jaworski 14 for Coeur d’Alene. Gracie Legg had 15 assists, Alexa Stavros 10 for the Vikings.

Senior Maddie Mitchell, who missed the last two weeks after suffering a concussion, had four kills for Coeur d’Alene.

“She came out tonight and played awesome,” Curtis said. “Hitting shots, scrappy on defense.”

Jenna Sarff had 11 kills and two blocks for Post Falls. Kylie Munday had seven kills, 18 assists, 13 digs and an ace, Vanessa Kison seven kills and 12 digs, Lucy Carr 10 assists, Kaela Gump two blocks and an ace, Danielle Codd one ace.

“I am always so proud of two rival schools coming together for an event to raise money for those in need and unite students, staff and community members for a common goal and enjoy volleyball,” Post Falls coach Willow Hanna said. “Coeur d’Alene played well and we struggled to get into a rhythm.”

Post Falls plays host to Lake City on Thursday.
