PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Waddington, Lake City make Pratt a winner in T-Wolf coaching debut

| November 17, 2023 1:15 AM

BOISE — Big-time players made big plays in big moments.

On Thursday, it was Avery Waddington’s moment.

Waddington, who signed with Montana last week, hit a 3-pointer with 38.5 seconds remaining, then had a blocked shot for Lake City, which beat the Boise Brave 49-43 in its season opener at Boise High.

“We threw a few things at them defensively that they hadn’t seen us do on film yet,” said first-year Lake City coach David Pratt. “They didn’t know what to expect. We made Avery (Howell, the state Gatorade Player of the Year for 2022-23, who has signed with USC) get rid of the ball, but she’s such a good player. We did a good job of limiting them to one shot and forced them into some tough shots.”

Sophia Zufelt and Macy Murphey scored 10 points each for Lake City, which plays Owyhee tonight.

Howell scored 15 points for Boise (3-1), which hosts Coeur d’Alene tonight.

It’s always a great challenge for us and fun to play a team like that because they play basketball the right way.”

Junior Landree Simon and sophomore Karstyn Kiefer had 12 points each for Lakeland (1-1).

“I thought our girls didn’t give up because they easily could have,” Derrick said. “When we went down 35-11 at halftime, I wasn’t sure how we were going to respond and we had some girls come off the bench who really stepped up.”
