COEUR d'ALENE — The 31st annual Lighting Ceremony Parade in downtown Coeur d'Alene is scheduled for Nov. 24. The theme is “A Coeur d’Alene Holiday Vacation."

Organized by the Coeur d’Alene Downtown Association and presented by Idaho Central Credit Union, the event is considered the kickoff to the holiday season. It includes marching bands, dancing, music, trucks with lights, floats and, as usual, Santa Claus.

After the parade on Sherman Avenue, people are invited to gather on The Coeur d’Alene Resort lawn for fireworks, carols and a countdown to the 35th annual Coeur d’Alene Resort Holiday Lighting Ceremony complements of the Hagadone Corp.

At the end of the fireworks display, the switch is flipped and over 1.5 million lights brighten the downtown area.

The parade starts at 5 p.m. at Eighth and Sherman and travels west to Government Way and Northwest Boulevard.

Parade applications will be accepted through Nov. 13. Participants are encouraged to "use your creativity to dress up your group, decorate your vehicle or float, and express your joy for the holidays."

Last year's parade had about 50 entries, with many of those decorated rigs. A big hit was the Grinch behind bars by the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office.
