STATE TRACK AND FIELD: Trevor's time for a title

| May 21, 2023 1:25 AM

5A

From start to finish, the leap was pretty obvious in the final moments of the boys state 5A 400-meter dash.

Lake City’s Trevor Cogley not only earned it off the track, but on it as well.

Cogley won the 400 in 48.36 seconds on Saturday at Mountain View High in Meridian after finishing third at state last year.

Cogley just started competing in the race as a junior.

“It’s really cool to see how far I’ve come,” said Cogley, who has signed to run track and field at Boise State. “From being third to winning it this year, it’s pretty amazing.”

Cogley was also third in the 200 and fourth as part of the Timberwolves' 4x100 relay team.

“I’m just really excited for him,” Lake City coach Kelly Reed said. “Going into the 400 as the top seed, I’m kind of relieved. Being the heavy favorite, sometimes that’s hard to deal with, but it wasn’t an issue for him at all. He was in control the entire race and it’s fun to see it when all that work pays off for a kid. Trevor’s worked his tail off and deserves it.”

Cogley spent the offseason working with the Spokane Speed Academy club program.

“My goal at the beginning of the season was to get better and get to this moment,” Cogley said. “The race felt pretty good the entire way through.”

Lake City senior Zach Johnson was fifth in the 100, as well as part of the 4x100 team.

“Zach’s an all-state football player, an integral part of a state championship (basketball) team and in the finals of the 100,” Reed said. “That sums up what kind of athlete he really is. Three-sport athletes don’t exist anymore, and if you’re the fifth-fastest kid in the state, it’s unbelievable. Zach was flying in the 4x100 to close the race and I thought we were third because he was going by guys at the end.”

Post Falls senior Trevor Miller, winner of the shot put on Friday, was third in the discus.

Coeur d’Alene senior Kytriana Burrell was third in the 200 and fourth in the 100. Sophomore Lachlan May was fourth in the 1,600.

Post Falls senior Capri Sims was second in the shot put, junior Kinlee McLean was fifth in the 400 and senior Annastasia Peters was sixth in the 1,600 after winning the 3,200 on Friday.

The Trojan girls 4x400 team set a school record in finishing second in 3:59.22, eclipsing the previous mark by nearly eight seconds (4:07 in 2021).

“It was a big-time school record, so we finished the season on a good note,” Post Falls coach Wade Quesnell said. “We knew we had an outside shot at a trophy in the boys and girls, and to finish sixth (girls) and seventh (boys) was pretty good for them. It was a really good season for the kids.”

Rocky Mountain won the state title for the 11th time in 12 years.

Boise’s girls won a third straight title.

Lakeland’s boys and girls 4x100 relay teams each finished runner-up in the state 4A meet at Mountain View High. The girls set a school record in 50 seconds flat, eclipsing the previous mark of 50.62 in 2021.

Sandpoint senior Rusty Lee was runner-up in the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles.

Lakeland senior Preston Jeffs was sixth in the shot put.

Sandpoint junior Ivy Smith was fourth in the discus after winning the shot put on Friday.

Bishop Kelly won its third straight boys title.

Skyline of Idaho Falls won its first girls title since 1983.

3A

At Middleton High, junior Caius Tebbe was second in the 110 hurdles and third in the 300 hurdles for Timberlake, which finished runner-up, the program’s highest finish since finishing second in 2010.

The school’s 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams finished third.

Battling back from a left hip injury, Coeur d'Alene Charter freshman Annabelle Carr wasn't sure if she could run long distances, let alone compete.

One thing she did know, she didn't want to do the 800.

"At the start of the year, I had no endurance whatsoever," Carr said. "My coaches wanted me to try the 800, but I didn't want to do it. I was planning on being good in the 1,600 and just wasn't able to train."

As it turns out, the 800 worked out well, as Carr won a state title Saturday in 2 minutes, 18.13 seconds.

"It just ended up being my race as it turns out," said Carr, who also was runner-up in the 1,600 and ran a leg of the school's third-place sprint medley relay team. "I'm really excited that I got to do this. My coaches weren't expecting me to do much this year. Winning was definitely a confidence boost."

Charter senior McKenna Kozeluh, who won the 3,200 on Friday, claimed the 1,600 title on Saturday.

Charter’s girls finished fifth.

Sugar-Salem won its second straight boys team title with 149 points. Timberlake had 72 points.

Weiser won its first girls title since 1990.

Priest River senior Matyus McLain was fifth in the 100 and fourth in the shot put, helping the Spartans finish 11th overall at Middleton High.

Kellogg junior Makai Peak was seventh in the 1,600.

Kellogg senior Lacey Medina was fifth in the 800.

Melba won its fifth straight girls title.

Aberdeen won the boys title.

Clark Fork seniors Nathan Shelton (sixth in 110 hurdles) and Savannah Weymouth (fourth in pole vault), as well as Mullan senior Kofi Appiah (eighth in the 100) placed in the 1A meet at Middleton High.

Raft River won its fifth straight girls title.

Victory Charter won the boys title for the first time.
