STATE TENNIS: Combes runner-up as Charter girls take fourth in 3A

Coeur d’Alene Charter sophomore Caitlin Combes advanced to the state 3A girls singles final on Saturday, but came up short to finish runner-up at Ridgevue High in Nampa.

Combes lost to Jordan Hicks of Declo 6-1, 6-4.

Junior Alexandria Montgomery finished fourth in girls singles for Coeur d’Alene Charter, which finished fourth for the program’s first trophy at state.

“Both Caitlin and Alexandria played great against some tough competition,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Brian King said. “Both will be back next year and hope to do even better, both individually and as a team. They’ll be players to watch next season.”

Sophomore Tate Burkholder and Owen Sharp were fourth in boys doubles for the Charter boys, who were fifth. Senior Oskar Hepworth, who was second at state in boys singles as a junior, was eliminated in the consolation semifinals.

“Oskar played a great tournament and has been dealing with tennis elbow all year,” King said. “He’s battled, but just fell a little short.”

Sun Valley (boys) and Parma (girls) won the 3A team titles.

In the 5A tournament, Lake City junior Maddy Nesbit finished fourth in girls singles for her first medal in three state appearances.

Eagle won the boys team title and Boise claimed its third straight girls title.

In 4A, the Lakeland boys doubles team of seniors Cole Andres and Brady Hanna finished fourth. Sandpoint junior Neva Reseska was fourth in girls singles.

Wood River won its second straight boys title and Bishop Kelly won its fourth straight girls title.
