Robert Benson, 80

Robert Arthur Benson, 80, of San Diego, Calif., passed away Thursday, April 27, 2023.

Robert was born in Wallace, Idaho, to Carl and Ida Benson on Jan, 14, 1943. He was raised in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and graduated in 1962 from Coeur d'Alene High School and has always remained a proud CHS Viking. He still kept in close contact with his former classmates, who he loved dearly. Bob joined the Navy in 1964, where he proudly served Our Country for 26 years. He retired as a proud Chief Petty Officer in 1990. After retiring from the Navy, he had a civilian career from 1991 to 2016 at Naval Medical Center in San Diego, including Lead Manpower Management Analyst and Human Resource Management. Bob retired in 2016 from his civilian career and spent the last 7 years living in Newport Coast, California, making frequent visits to see his loved ones.

Bob enjoyed golf and bass fishing. He belonged to a fishing club and earned several awards for his bass fishing endeavors. He owned a boat, which he loved very much.

Bob is survived by his wife, Julie Benson, daughters Luana Lynn Benson-Cottom and Laura Benson, son-in-law Robert Cottom, grandchildren Raquelle, Alyssa (and her Fiancé Chris), Donovan (and his wife, Anais) and Devin and great-grandchildren Benjamin, Louie, AvaLynn and Aubrey Lynn from San Diego. He is also survived by his sister, Penny Russell of Coeur d'Alene, nieces Lori Lynn Latuseck and Lisa Goodwin and their husbands Casey Latuseck and Mark Goodwin. Bob is also survived by brother Ben Benson, his wife, Nancy Benson of Post Falls, Idaho, and nephews Guy Benson, Brian Benson, David Benson and Robert Roe. Bob leaves behind many beloved friends, coworkers and extended family.

Bob will be returned to his hometown of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

A celebration of life for Robert Benson will take place in the gazebo area at Coeur d’Alene City Park on Sunday, June 4, 2023, at 11 a.m.
