COEUR d’ALENE — Challenges like the one facing Post Falls High senior Annastasia Peters won’t be found here.

She proved that by running away with a title in Thursday’s 5A Region 1 girls 3,200-meter race at Coeur d'Alene High, winning in 10 minutes, 46.29 seconds, nearly 34 seconds faster than her closest competitor.

Earlier this spring, Peters competed in the Arcadia (Calif.) Invitational on April 8, then again at the Oregon Relays (April 22) in Eugene, Ore., where she was 21st and seventh, respectively in the 3,000-meter races.

“There’s definitely more stress and pressure going into those races,” Peters said. “For me, I think it definitely played a role and you’re thinking, ‘Oh no, am I going to be with them or behind.’ A lot of the girls at those races are used to those competitive, upbeat environments and I really didn’t know what to expect really. I definitely felt the nerves a lot. I was just with my dad (Anthony) and didn’t have my team with me or coaches, so you’re on your own. Honestly, it can get kind of scary and a little overwhelming.”

Peters has won the 3,200 five times this spring, including at the Pasco Invitational in April.

“I really just wanted to build confidence in myself and tried to go to some bigger races, because I’m not really used to racing with people,” Peters said. “Although I didn’t perform as well as I’d like at Arcadia and Oregon, it was a great experience for going to state. There, there’s going to be more people and a lot more aggressive race.”

Peters was second at state in the 3,200 last year, finishing in 10:51.53.

“It’s completely different there,” Peters said. “Pacing yourself against other people is totally different. Coming into the season, I wasn’t as consistent as I wanted to be. I’d have some good weeks and others where my body is not cooperating, so it’s been an up and down season. I just really want to stay consistent and positive going into state next week.”

Peters won the state 5A cross country title in October at the Lewiston Orchards, winning in a course record 16:56.07.

“They’re two different sports,” Peters said. “I really can’t compare them and always go back and forth depending on what sport I’m competing in. In track, I think that’s the best, but when cross country comes around I really enjoy that as well. The workouts are different and in cross country, you rarely go on the track. In cross, the workouts involve hills and all different types of terrain. In track, it’s you against the elements.”

Peters was also third at state in the 1,600 as a junior.

“To me, the outcome isn’t everything as long as I give it my all,” Peters said. “For me, I was hoping to PR today, but don’t think the conditions were good enough for that today. I definitely want to take a couple of seconds off by PR for sure and see what happens.”

At one point this winter, Lakeland senior Preston Jeffs wasn’t quite sure if or when he’d be back to throwing the shot and discus.

Any doubt was quickly erased after Jeffs broke his left scapula (shoulder blade) during the North Idaho Rumble wrestling tournament.

“I made it back just in time for track,” said Jeffs, who won the 4A boys regional title in the shot put on Thursday with a throw of 48 feet, 9 ¾ inches. “I didn’t think I’d perform the way that I have this year because of it. But it healed quickly.”

Jeffs has signed to play football at Fullerton Community College in California.

“I’ve been playing football since kindergarten and like playing that a lot more than track,” Jeffs said. “I usually do track to have something to do when I’m not playing football.”

Jeffs transferred from Timberlake High to Lakeland after his freshman year.

“We’d moved into Rathdrum and I was talking to the wrestling coach and it just seemed like it was a better fit for me,” Jeffs said. “I went there and my sister (Blayre, who won the state 3A title in the discus and shot put in 2021) stayed at Timberlake.”

Jeffs also had some Division I interest in football.

“I had preferred walk-ons at Idaho and Washington State, but Fullerton kind of called out to me,” Jeffs said. “It’s warm and seems like a cool place to go.”

Jeffs’ high mark of 51-3 ¾ is ranked sixth in the state in 4A.

“I feel like I know what I’ve got to do now to place at state,” Jeffs said. “Knowing what I need to throw, I can just go out and do that now.”

Later, Jeffs won the discus with a throw of 131-9.

Both meets conclude today at Sweeney Track in Lewiston starting at 2 p.m.
