CDA SCHOOL LEVY: Does not seem right

| May 5, 2023 1:00 AM

I don’t know what the “Levy Rate” that Dr. Hocker used in his opinion piece in the Coeur d’Alene Press on April 26 is, but look at https://www.sde.idaho.gov/finance/ and you find actual numbers. Here are some of the numbers I found published by the state department of education (sde). Draw your own conclusions.

• Bonneville Jt. School District: 13.5K students, 1,594 employees, $6 million levy

• Idaho Falls School District: 10K students, 1.309 employees, $7 million levy

• Pocatello School District: 12K students, 1,384 employees, $7 million levy

• Napa School District: 10K students, 1,342 employees, $8 million levy

• Boise Independent S.D.: 23K students, 3,054 employees, 11 million levy

• Coeur d’Alene School District: 10K students, 1,302 employees, $20 million levy

Now, Coeur d’Alene School District wants a $25 million levy?

Something just doesn’t seem right.

Editor’s note: The statewide average total property tax rate for combined school levies is $1.85 per $1,000 in tax year 2022 (FY 2023). From largest to smallest tax rate, CDA ranks 82 out of 116 school districts. CDA’s tax rate is the third smallest out of the top 20 largest districts.
