The Idaho State Society Daughters of the American Revolution honored Lakes Middle School teacher Tanya Lilley as the 2023 Idaho Outstanding Teacher of American History during a dinner and ceremony April 21.

The contest’s purpose is to recognize notable, full-time teachers of American history for grades five through 12. Lilley was presented with a certificate, lapel pin and a monetary award of $500 during the DAR dinner.

Lilley was awarded the Outstanding Teacher of American History award and further nominated to the state competition by the Lt. George Farragut DAR Chapter, which cited her energy and creativity to make history as exciting as possible. With a hands-on simulation of the Civil War, or transforming her classroom into colonial America and the Oregon Trail, Lilley makes American history come alive for her students.

“The Idaho State Society Daughters of the American Revolution cannot envision a more-worthy nominee to be the recipient of this award,” said Idaho State Regent Catherine McClintick.

In addition to classroom teaching filled with hands-on learning, Lilley hosts an after-school history club for students, runs an annual history bee, organizes international tours and will soon take over as organizer of student trips to Washington, D.C.

“It is an honor to bestow this award to Tanya Lilley in her hometown,” McClintick said. “Her tireless efforts to engage students in American history make an incredible impact on Idaho students and within our community.”
