COEUR d'ALENE — An alleged child enticement incident that gained steam on social media turned out to be a case of good Samaritans trying to be sure a child was OK.

"As most people are aware, social media is often not the most reliable source of information," Police Chief Lee White said in a Wednesday press release.

The Coeur d’Alene Police Department received a report Tuesday regarding an alleged child enticement near North Pinegrove Drive and West Park Avenue on Monday.

The report alleged a 9-year-old female was approached and followed by two different men in two separate vehicles as she walked to a friend’s house.

Police were provided with surveillance footage, which depicted both men and the vehicles they were driving.

"Still images and information from this incident had been spread on social media several hours before the police were notified, which missed significant context concerning the situation," the release said.

Detectives made contact with all parties involved.

Police said the two men, who were unrelated, independently indicated they saw a girl who appeared to be about 5 years old and were concerned about her welfare.

"An independent witness who saw the girl walk past his house thought she was only 3 years old," the release said.

One of the men asked the girl if she was OK and if her parents knew where she was, police said. She then walked to her friend’s house.

Both men contacted the adults at the house to ensure the girl was OK.

"The audio recording from the Ring camera supports this information," the release said.

Police encouraged people to contact them if there are concerns and avoid spreading misinformation on social media.

"Please contact your police department immediately if you are aware of any concerning activity so it can be properly investigated," White said.
