PREP SOFTBALL: Lake City opens Hensley era with split

RICHLAND — The Lake City Timberwolves beat Central Valley 21-4, and lost to Hermiston (Ore.) 8-5, in their season opener Saturday at the Richland mixer at Columbia Playfields.

Hope Bodak of Lake City went 4 for 4 with eight RBIs and four runs scored against Central Valley. She hit a two-run single in the second inning, a grand slam later in the second and a two-run double in the fourth.

Kaelee Kolden went 2 for 4 with an RBI and three runs scored for the T-Wolves, and Kylee Palmer struck out seven in four innings.

Against Hermiston, Layla Gugino hit a two-run homer in the fifth, and Taylor Hill also homered for Lake City.

“We came out today excited to play, focused, and we competed,” said first-year Lake City coach Jordyn Hensley, a former T-Wolf pitcher and 2014 Lake City High grad. “They fought hard in the second game and showed some grit. Overall, I think it was a good start to the season.”

Lake City plays host to Timberlake on Thursday in a doubleheader.

Coeur d’Alene splits at Richland mixer

RICHLAND, Wash. — The Vikings beat Mead 11-5 and lost 8-2 to Chiawana of Pasco on Saturday at the Columbia Playfields.

Against Mead, Preslie McLaughlin hit a three-run double in a five-run first inning for Coeur d‘Alene. Chloe Burke hit a two-run triple in the fifth, and finished 2 for 4 with two runs scored. Delaney Gosch was 2 for 4 and scored twice.

Against Chiawana, Morgan Knutson had two hits for the Vikings.

Coeur d’Alene (2-1) is scheduled to return to action April 6 at home vs. Timberlake.

Lakeland opens

With two losses

RICHLAND, Wash. — Hannah Zeilstra homered for the Hawks in their season opener, a 9-7 loss to Hermiston (Ore.) at the Columbia Playfields.

Katie Dewey went 3 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored for Lakeland.

In the second game, Lakeland managed just one hit in a 9-0 loss to Kamiakin of Kennewick.

Lakeland returns to action April 4 with a doubleheader at Timberlake.

COLVILLE, Wash. — While most other North Idaho teams headed south in search of playable fields, the Tigers ventured north, and came home with a sweep of the Crimson Hawks.

Logan Walsh went 7 for 9 with three homers, nine RBIs and six runs scored for Timberlake (2-1). Acacia Pecor was 5 for 9 with a homer and four RBIs, and also struck out 13 in 10 innings pitched. Ashley Grantham also homered in the opener.

“We hit the ball really well today,” Timberlake coach Casi Lupinacci said. “Logan and Acacia both hit the ball well, and Acacia pitched well.”

Timberlake travels to East Valley on Monday.

Sandpoint opens season with two losses

RICHLAND, Wash. — The Bulldogs fell to Kamiakin of Kennewick 17-0 and Riverside of Chattaroy, Wash., 19-8 in their season openers at the Columbia Playfields.

After managing just one hit in the opener, Sandpoint totaled seven hits against Riverside, with Cadence Skibitsky hitting two triples and Mayle Ducken singling and doubling and driving in three runs.

Ducken struck out three in the first game, and Ashlyn Darling fanned four in the second game.

"We are excited to go down to Boise and play four more games next weekend. This team is going to keep progressing and growing every week,” Sandpoint coach Elizabeth Hawkins-Williams said.
