Library Alliance drive collects over 200 items for people in need

Library Lovers’ Month ended on a high note for those hoping to help local people in need.

More than 200 items were collected during the Community Library Network Alliance's February Hygiene Hamper drive, an effort that garnered the engagement and support of many in the community.

The Community Library Network is a network of eight libraries spanning two counties, representing North Idahoans in Kootenai and Shoshone counties. Its libraries, where the collection hampers were stationed, include Athol, Harrison, Hayden, Pinehurst, Post Falls, Rathdrum, Spirit Lake and the Bookmobile.

"The hampers have been a way to serve the most vulnerable in our community, by discreetly providing necessities — and some dignity — to those in need, from babies to adults," youth services coordinator Karen Yother said.

Emily Christopherson, founder of the Community Library Network Alliance, said one of her goals when forming the alliance was to bring awareness to some of the lesser-known ways the network's libraries assist all community members.

"I am thrilled by the community engagement we saw throughout the month," Christopherson said. "Each time I stopped by the Hayden Library, the donation bin was filled to the top. What was even more exciting was being able to bring awareness to such a worthy service. I am grateful the alliance had the opportunity to help serve our community.”

The Community Library Network Alliance is a grassroots movement formed by passionate, concerned citizens who saw the need for positive community support and education around the local library network. The alliance is independent and not affiliated with the Community Library Network. The alliance will provide nonpartisan voter information for the May 16 trustee election.
