Forests offer preferred space for fuelwood cutting

Idaho Panhandle National Forests will open a “preferred” fuelwood cutting area on the Coeur d'Alene River Ranger District starting today, and remaining open through Thursday, Aug. 31. The area provides access to multiple cutting sites.

Personal fuelwood cutting is free to the public on Idaho Panhandle National Forests for the remainder of the year, but cutters must still obtain a free, personal use permit from a local Forest Service office.

The “Unknown Pony” fuelwood area is located north of Kellogg and Wallace on the east side of the Coeur d’Alene River Ranger District. It's accessible via Forest Service Road 456 south of Babins Junction and located on the southeast side of Beaver Creek along Forest Service roads 3100, 3100C, 3100D, 3100E, 3101 and 3102. Roads will be individually signed for fuelwood gathering.

Stop by a Forest Service office to obtain a hard copy Personal Use Firewood Cutting Permit. Contact the Fernan Office at 208-664-2318 or the Silver Valley Office at 208-783-2363 or pick up forms in person between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m in service offices.
