LEGION BASEBALL: Lums advance to title game at Lewiston tourney
LEWISTON — The Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen split their two games at the Dwight Church Memorial Tournament on Saturday at Lewis-Clark State’s Harris Field.
But the Lums’ 12-5 over the Nampa Chiefs in their first game was good enough to advance Coeur d’Alene (8-5) to tonight’s 6 p.m. championship game vs. the Mercedes Benz Boys, a club team from Seattle.
“One of the reasons we came here is, we wanted to see them,” Lums coach Darren Taylor said. “It’s pretty cool to see them in a championship game.”
Coeur d’Alene lost 9-6 to the Lewis-Clark Twins on Saturday night, in a game that also counted in the class AA North Idaho League standings.
As the only two AA teams in North Idaho, both the Lums and Twins have already qualified for the state AA tournament in July at Thorco Field in Coeur d’Alene starting July 24.
Saturday’s game, as well as a doubleheader scheduled for July 19 at Thorco, will determine seeding for state.
Against Nampa, Kyle Bridge went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored for the Lums, including a two-run triple in the sixth inning.
Bryce Hall went 3 for 5 with two RBIs and two runs scored, and Eric Bumbaugh drove in two runs and scored twice.
Isaac Ziegler earned the win with 6.1 innings of relief, allowing three hits, striking out six and walking two. He allowed two runs, one earned.
Against Lewis-Clark, Hall went 4 for 5 with two runs scored for the Lums, but the Twins jumped out to a 7-2 lead after three innings and held on. Hayden Line was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored for Lewis-Clark (3-8).
“We played like we were already in the title game,” Taylor said of the Lewis-Clark game. “Not our proudest moment. Lewiston’s good, but we made a ton of baseball mistakes — running into each other on a popup, booting ground balls, getting doubled off on a line drive with the bases loaded.”
Bumbaugh drove in two runs for the Lums.

Northern Lakes splits again at Bozeman tourney
BOZEMAN, Mont. — The class A Mountaineers beat the Kalispell Lakers 9-5, then fell 8-6 to the Bozeman Bucks to finish 2-2 in pool play at the Howard Rein tournament.
“The biggest thing is, we’ve been cashing in with guys on,” Northern Lakes coach Bryce Johnson said.
Coming into the Bozeman game, the Mountaineers knew, win or lose, the two teams would be the second and third seeds, and meet again today at noon PDT in the semifinal game of the seven-team tournament. The winner will play the top seed, the Helena Reps, in the title game at 2:30 p.m. PDT.
Against Kalispell, Raiston Ellwood was 2 for 3 with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored for Northern Lakes (6-4). Caleb Mason doubled and drove in a pair of runs.
Mountaineers pitchers allowed just three hits, but walked 10 and hit one.
Against Bozeman, Andrew Horn went 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored for Northern Lakes, and Ellwood was 2 for 4 and scored twice.
Moses Feltenstein hit a two-run homer in the fourth to put Bozeman up 4-3. The Bucks added five in the fifth to lead 8-3, then held on as the Mountaineers brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh after Horn’s RBI double.
“It was a fun game to be a part of,” Johnson said. “Probably the most high-level baseball we’ve played all year.”
