DEMOCRACY: ‘Where the mob rules’

| July 30, 2023 1:00 AM

The July 27 “My Turn” writer demonstrates public education’s many failures, especially in making informed citizens.

In a 1787 journal entry, James McHenry of Maryland wrote, “A lady asked Dr. Franklin Well Doctor, what have we got a republic or a monarchy?” Franklin replied, “A republic if you can keep it.”

We remind ourselves of this vital distinction at every Pledge of Allegiance recitation. It appears neither the writer nor the Press has internalized the significance, continuing to describe America as a democracy!

Hence, lies the impasse; the writer and the Press want a Democracy where the mob rules while Republicans, and JBS members, strive to preserve the Republic. And by the way, Hillsdale College offers free online courses at https://online.hillsdale.edu/course-list on the Constitution and Government.

The writer and Press staff might consider enrolling in “Constitution 101: The Meaning and History of the Constitution.”
