| July 22, 2023 1:00 AM

The Literacy Project of North Idaho will host “WalkRunREAD” a 5k Community event in support of literacy, featuring a 5k, Kids Dash, Family Activities, Raffle Prizes, and a Book Sale/Swap Aug. 5 in Post Falls.

In addition to the 5k/Kids Dash, there will be a book swap/sale and family fun area with storytime, an obstacle course, free items for kids, special treats for purchase, and more to be announced as we get closer to the date. The book sale/swap invites participants to swap one summer read for another and purchase additional titles for $5 or less.

The Literacy Project of North Idaho, an affiliate of ProLiteracy America, provides service in Coeur d’Alene, Post Falls, Hayden, Rathdrum and surrounding communities as far reaching as Sandpoint and Plummer, pairing tutors with adult learners for one-on-one English tutoring.

The Literacy Project has two locations to help adults and families develop the necessary English skills to communicate with their children, doctors, employers, and neighbors. Adult literacy at Molstead Library, NIC continues to grow as more adults become aware of the program and seek to improve their literacy skills at this central location. The Rathdrum location (15506 Washington St) supports adult learning for the northern communities. Both support basic adult learning, ESL learners and family literacy.

The Literacy Project is a program of success stories – no matter how large or small the success may seem, each one is a triumph for students and keeps them on the path to become better speakers, readers and writers. As students develop their English skills, they are able to improve their lives and contribute to the community. Students have passed driving exams, gotten their GEDs, filled out job applications, been promoted at work, and registered to vote to engage more with their community.

The nonprofit organization depends on the monetary and time donations of literacy volunteers and friends within the community. The Literacy Project is volunteer run and exist on the generosity of the community to serve the community.

Registration for the 5k is $30, Kids Dash is $15 and. Prices increase by $5 on the day of the event. All kids under 6 are free for all events. Registration for these events is at RunSignup: runsignup.com/Race/ID/PostFalls/WalkRunReadNorthIdaho
