LIBRARY NETWORK: Library services add depth to communities

| July 21, 2023 1:00 AM

Twenty years ago I was looking for a place to live. I had the time to seriously consider the community before I moved. One of the major things that attracted me to Post Falls was the library. I believe the Community Library Network is a major community builder.

I believe that the cuts in programming proposed by the new trustees threaten real community in this area. There has to be more than just housing to grow a community. I have seen places where people stay until their first opportunity to get out. Our libraries are part of what makes people want to stay here and become part of the community.

As to why the Network is doing all these things outside the libraries, these programs are needed and no one else is providing these services. While I seldom go in the building, I use the Post Falls Library several times a week. The library services and activities add real depth to our communities.

The direction the current board seems to be heading will bring us a dusty book dead library. I want a real library that helps grow community. I want more than just a place to sleep and that requires real services.

As for volunteers to make up for budget cuts, I will support that when I see Ottosen, Hanley and Plass doing volunteer work at a library for 10 hours a week each, not including board time.
