LEGION BASEBALL: Northern Lakes wins opener at Missoula tourney
MISSOULA, Mont. — Grant Allaway’s two-run double in the bottom of the fourth inning broke a 4-all tie, and the Northern Lakes Mountaineers class A team beat the Bitterroot Bucs 18U 6-5 on Thursday at Lindborg-Cregg Memorial Field on the first day of the Missoula Mavericks Tournament.
“It was awesome for him to come through in the right spot,” Northern Lakes coach Bryce Johnson said.
Raiston Ellwood singled and Andrew Horn walked ahead of Allaway’s big hit for Northern Lakes (16-8).
Sam Pemberton hit a two-run single in the third inning for the Mountaineers. Ellwood was 2 for 4 with two runs scored.
“Defensively, we did a good job limiting damage,” Johnson said. “That (Bitterroot) team can hit — last year they were playing pinball with the outfield fence. I would not be surprised to see them again Sunday (in the championship game).”
In the sixth, Bitterroot loaded the bases with nobody out. The Bucs scored one, but with out out, Kenny Wells made an over-the-shoulder, diving catch in center field on a ball hit over his head. He threw to second for the double play to end the inning.
Caleb Mason went 3 for 4 and scored twice, and had all three assists at shortstop in the seventh.
“He was lights out,” Johnson said.
Today, Northern Lakes plays Blackfoot at 3 p.m. and the Missoula Mavericks at 6.
