The Lake City Thunder 18U team, loaded with local players, won the top (Red) bracket at the 4th of July Blowout last weekend in Spokane, outscoring their opponents 67-9.

In pool play, the Thunder opened with a 20-0 victory over the Washington Acers of Kent, Wash. Kristine Schmidt pitched a one-hitter for the Thunder, with 10 strikeouts. Matea Dorame was 3 for 4 with a double and five RBIs, Schmidt hit a two-run homer, and Catherine Bakken had three hits, including a double. The Thunder played error-free ball.

The Thunder then beat Fusion-Swingley from Great Falls, Mont., 18-3. Bakken had three hits, including a three-run homer, and finished with four RBIs. Kaidyn Howard had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Kaci Kiblen homered, and Schmidt and Delaney Gosch each had two RBIs.

The Thunder then beat the Diamonds-Casedy/Greyer from Spokane 13-1.

Emma McManigle hit a two-run homer and a double in the win. Howard struck out four and allowed two hits.

In the Red Bracket semifinals, the Lake City Thunder held on to beat the Diamonds-Sefton/Waldron of Spokane 7-5, on the strength of a six-run fourth inning.

Layla Gugino hit two doubles, and Bakken had two hits. McManigle, Logan Walsh and Katie Berg each drove in two runs.

In the championship game, Schmidt pitched a no-hitter as the Lake City Thunder beat the AP USA Explosion-Terry McIntyre of the Tri-Cities 9-0.

Schmidt struck out eight and walked none in five innings.

The Thunder scored eight runs in the fifth inning. Bakken hit a two-run homer, and McManigle and Gugino each knocked in two runs.

The Thunder has two tournaments remaining, starting with the Idaho state championships this weekend in Caldwell.

The Premier is comprised of boys from Coeur d'Alene High, Sandpoint High, Post Falls High, Freeman High and Ridgeline High. All are sophomores going into their junior year.
