Man charged with kidnapping

COEUR d’ALENE — A man is in jail after police said he held a woman in his vehicle against her will and interfered with her 911 call.

Daniel C. Shoemaker, 50, of Spokane Valley, Wash., is charged with kidnapping in the second degree, a felony.

The charge stems from Tuesday night, when 911 dispatchers received a call from a woman who said she was being held against her will in a blue Ford Mustang traveling along Huetter Road.

Deputies searched the area for the vehicle but were unable to find it. They later determined that the woman was at her residence in Rathdrum and met her there.

She told police she had an argument with Shoemaker while riding in his vehicle. As they approached her residence, Shoemaker allegedly hit the gas and passed the turn into her neighborhood.

The woman said Shoemaker was driving in excess of 80 mph, causing other vehicles to swerve off the road to avoid colliding with him, and refused to stop and let her out.

She told police that Shoemaker had physically harmed her in the past and she feared that he was going to “take her somewhere and kill her” Tuesday night.

When she called 911, Shoemaker allegedly shouted and turned up the volume on the radio to make it difficult for the dispatcher to hear her.

After she gave the dispatcher Shoemaker’s name and a description of his vehicle, the woman said Shoemaker took her home.

Police reviewed the 911 call recording, in which the woman could be heard crying and pleading with Shoemaker to take her home. They also interviewed Shoemaker, who told investigators that he had “accidentally passed the turn” to the woman’s house.

Deputies arrested Shoemaker on Wednesday.

Judge James Stow ordered Thursday that Shoemaker be held on $25,000 bail and issued a no contact order.
