PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Lakeland falls in wacky finish

| January 28, 2023 1:15 AM

RATHDRUM — After Lakeland battled back to take a one-point lead late, Moscow’s Brayson Reed capped a wild finish by drilling a 3-pointer from the left baseline at the buzzer to lift the Bears past the Hawks 63-61 in an Inland Empire League thriller Friday night at Hawk Court.

Nick Nowell hit a turnaround jumper in the lane with 4 seconds left to put Lakeland (3-11, 1-3 IEL) up 61-60.

Moscow (8-7, 2-2) called a timeout.

Then …

“They threw a full court pass, it was tipped, we intercepted, we just started celebrating early, and we got called for a travel,” Lakeland coach Tony Hanna explained. “And they hit a great shot at the end.”

Moscow inbounded under its own basket and Dylan Rehder, who led all scorers with 18 points, passed to his right to Reed, who hit a contested jumper from the corner to win it.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” Hanna said. “We had it. Game over.”

Scotty Hocking scored 16 points, Ben Ryan 13, Kenton Ferguson 11 for Lakeland, which jumped out to an 18-8 lead after one quarter.

Trailing by eight at the half, Moscow outscored Lakeland 25-11 in the third quarter, and led 55-46 with three minutes left.

Collin Cameron drilled a 3 to pull Lakeland within 57-54, and Hocking’s 3-point play with 1:17 left tied it at 57. Hocking sank two free throws with 39 seconds left to give the Hawks a two-point lead, Cody Wilson answered with a three-point play for Moscow with 24 seconds left.

Rehder finished with four 3s, Reed 11 points and two 3s for Moscow. Zac Skinner scored 12.

SPIRIT LAKE — The Williamses — Ridge and Asher — combined for 19 of the Badgers' 27 third-quarter points in a win over the Tigers in the Backwoods Brawl spirit game at Timberlake High.

Bonners Ferry (14-1) finished 22 of 26 from the free-throw line, compared to 9 of 22 for Timberlake (6-10) in the first of two games between the lone two teams in the Intermountain League.

Ayson McLuskie scored 11 of his team-high 18 points in the second quarter for Timberlake.

“I was proud of the way our kids played,” Timberlake coach Mike LaFountaine said. “Ayson had a phenomenal night and was 3 of 3 from the 3-point line in the second quarter. We had a little longer halftime and I don’t know that it cooled us down. That third quarter just killed us.”

Timberlake and Bonners Ferry, ranked first in this week’s state prep boys basketball media poll, meet again at Bonners Ferry on Feb. 17.

“Our kids are learning that we can play with them,” LaFountaine said. “Bonners is a good team, but we can play with them.”

We put a really good first 12 minutes together, then started fouling and turning the ball over. Clark Fork’s a scrappy team and plays hard.”
