PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Sans Sands, St. Maries cruises past Genesis Prep

| January 22, 2023 1:13 AM

POST FALLS — Even without standout guard Greyson Sands, the St. Maries Lumberjacks showed Saturday night they still have plenty of dudes.

Tristun Hill had 22 points and 10 rebounds, Trace Wicks added 17 points, Tyler Renner 13 as the visiting Lumberjacks toppled the Genesis Prep Jaguars 75-51 in nonleague play at The Courts at Real Life. All are seniors.

Sands, a senior, suffered a Grade 2 MCL sprain in his left knee in Thursday’s game at Orofino. He’s expected to be out 3-4 weeks, and the Lumberjacks hope to have him back for districts, coach Bryan Chase said.

“We still have a good core group of seniors, five of them playing together for a long time,” Chase said. “And we got good minutes out of our juniors.”

Senior Dillon Holder added seven points and eight assists for St. Maries (7-3), whose pressure and size were too much for Genesis Prep.

“Their post play was what hurt us; they were tough inside,” Genesis Prep coach Lon Morast said, referring to Renner and Hill, both 6-6. “And we turned it over too much; we didn’t handle the pressure very well, way too many turnovers.”

“Both Tristun and Tyler played well; we tried to make sure that a point of emphasis — start inside and work our way outside,” Chase said. “Once we polished up our spacing that opened things up a bit.”

Joey Specht scored 19 points for Genesis Prep (5-8), next plays Friday at Clark Fork.

St. Maries returns to action Saturday at Grangeville.
