FOUNDING FATHERS: Christian or not?

| January 20, 2023 1:00 AM

There is still controversy as to whether or not our founding fathers were Christians, or just a bunch of old, atheistic, slaveowners. I personally believe that the majority of our founding fathers were Christians for a number of reasons.

First off, many of their direct quotes are Christian centered. (Many direct quotes can be found in the book “America’s God and Country” by William Federer). One of the many Christian quotes from our founding fathers is one from George Washington. In a speech to Delaware Chiefs on May 12, 1779; he said, “You will do well to learn our ways of life, and above all, the religion of Jesus Christ. These will make you a greater and happier people than you are.” Also, in a letter to 13 Governors, June 8, 1783, he refers to Jesus Christ as “The Divine Author of our blessed Religion.”

Secondly, an exhaustive study done by Dr. M. E. Bradford has shown that there were 28 Episcopalians, eight Presbyterians, seven Congregationalists, two Dutch Reformed, two Lutherans, two Methodists, two Roman Catholics, one unknown, and three Deists (other evidence does not support that they were so-called Deists). I will conclude by saying that we are so blessed to have had the vast majority of founding fathers as Christians, or in the very least, held to sound biblical principles to give birth to this great nation of ours.
