NIC ROUNDUP: Holmes, Thomas shine for Cardinal men

COEUR d’ALENE — North Idaho College matched beef with beef in its 100-67 rout of Walla Walla Community College in Northwest Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon at Rolly Williams Court.
Phil Holmes (6-foot-9, 220 pounds) got his first start of the year for NIC, matched up against Walla Walla’s Kyson Rose (6-9, 240). Holmes held Rose to three field goals and 11 points.
“Phil is our biggest kid, and he did the job,” NIC coach Corey Symons said.
Kamryn Thomas hit 3 of 3 3-pointers and scored 17 points off the bench for NIC (16-0, 4-0 NWAC), ranked No. 1 in the conference’s coaches poll.
“He’s been trying to find his role,” Symons said. “That was a big spark off the bench. He’s long and athletic. Our whole bench played well.”
Cobi Campbell, in his first game back after suffering a minor fracture in his right (non-shooting) thumb, scored 13 points off the bench, and Kyle Karstetter added 11 off the bench.
Taden King of NIC led all scorers with 20 points, and Julius Mims added 10 points, 15 rebounds and two blocked shots.
Josh Gillespie scored 13 points for Walla Walla (13-4, 2-2).
NIC plays at Blue Mountain on Monday.

Cardinals take third
at NJCAA Coaches duals
MIAMI, Okla. — Cardinal freshman Travis Waldner beat Cayden Felts 3-1 at 184 pounds to clinch a 23-21 win over Carl Albert State of Poteau, Okla., in the third-place match at the NJCAA Coaches Duals tournament at Northeast Oklahoma A&M.
NIC beat Northeast Oklahoma A&M 23-21 in the quarterfinals, then fell to Triton College 28-13 in the semifinals on Saturday after going 2-1 on Friday to advance.
Sophomore Brant Porter went unbeaten at 141 pounds for NIC.
Iowa Western beat Triton 31-9 in the championship dual.
NIC hosts Simon Fraser on Thursday and Clackamas on Friday.

COEUR d’ALENE — Sophomore Paige Beem scored a game-high 19 points for the Cardinals, who were held to 16-of-49 shooting in a Northwest Athletic Conference loss to the East Region-leading Warriors at Rolly Williams Court.
“Our kids played their hearts out and played really tough,” NIC coach Nathan Covill said. “We did a lot of things defensively to give ourselves a chance to win the game. Walla Walla hit some shots down the stretch to pull away, and we didn’t. I’m extremely proud of the kids and where the program is going. We just need to keep getting better day by day.”
NIC (8-7, 2-2) has lost two straight after winning its first two conference games.
Paige Pentzer had 15 points and seven rebounds for Walla Walla (14-2, 4-0).
NIC travels to Blue Mountain of Pendleton, Ore., on Monday.
