PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Coeur d'Alene hands Timberlake first loss on Symons' big night

| January 11, 2023 1:25 AM

SPIRIT LAKE — Madi Symons scored 14 points and became Coeur d'Alene's all-time leading scorer as the 5A Vikings beat the 3A Timberlake Tigers 52-48 on Tuesday night.

Symons, a senior, now has 1,294 points, eclipsing the previous record of 1,293, set by Kama Griffitts (2005-09).

Maddie Mitchell also scored 14 points for Coeur d'Alene (12-2), which led by 19 points after three quarters.

“It was pretty back and forth in the first half,” Timberlake coach Matt Miller said. “Both teams had a hard time making a shot. Both teams were playing really good defense and it was a good defensive battle. They just went to a half-court trap that gave us trouble in the third quarter, and it was the decisive quarter (15-3). Our girls kept fighting and made a comeback, but Coeur d’Alene was a little too much to handle.”

Malia Miller scored 15 points for Timberlake (11-1), which travels to Sandpoint on Thursday.

“I thought the girls showed a lot of toughness and grit to keep fighting,” Matt Miller said. “I’m really happy with their effort and never-give-up attitude. We battled hard and tried to keep up with them the best we could.”

Coeur d’Alene (12-2) hosts Lake City in the Fight for the Fish spirit game on Friday.
