WATER POLO

Kroc/CDA Water Polo Club continues winning tradition

The Kroc/CDA Water Polo Club boys and girls teams successfully defended their state high school championships in Boise recently.

In doing so, the Coeur d’Alene team has extended its series of Idaho state championship titles to 10 years in a row. In the championship games, the boys varsity team beat Boise 22-11, while the girls varsity team also beat the Boise girls 19-4.

Men’s division: The tournament started Friday with the teams playing several games in the evening. The boys JV played in a hard-fought game against a tough Boise varsity team, eventually losing 14-7. The Kroc-CDA varsity teams had an easier time of it Friday with the boys varsity team easily defeating Magic Valley 11-7.

On Saturday morning, the boys coed JV team played the Boise JV team and won with a convincing 15-5 final score. Taylor Holding led the Kroc/CDA boys with four goals. Mason Bentley, Brennan McCrea, Luke Griffiths, Will Park, Will Gallatin, Owen Call, Greta Hover and Claire Thorpe all scored also.

The championship rounds began on Saturday afternoon. In the 3rd place championship, the boys JV game played Magic Valley varsity. The game was close but Magic Valley was able to outlast CDA. The boys scored a total of eight goals, with Will Park leading the scoring with three goals while playing the challenging set position. Tucker Rigg and Mason Curry had two goals each and Taylor Holding also contributed a goal.  Rigg had a great overall game with three steals and two assists to go along with his two goals. Garrett Snyder provided excellent goalie work, blocking multiple shots from Boise, keeping the game close. Between Snyder and Curry, the CDA team looks to have very strong goalies over the next several years.

In the championship game, the CDA boys had a well-played competitive match with the Boise Sharks. The game was close in the first half with Boise scoring two of the first three goals. The CDA team sharpened its play as the game went on and were able to steadily increase their first quarter lead to a solid final score of 22-11. Isaac Thorpe had an outstanding game with nine goals, including a number of fast breaks and perimeter shots against a quality Boise goalie. Jack Rigg also had a very good game with four goals spread throughout the match. Brody Walters shot three strong goals from the perimeter. Additional goals were scored by Ben Simmons, Quade Castaneda, Travis Strimback and Grayson Hartfield. Castaneda set a strong hole throughout the game, forcing Boise to drop players to cover him which opened up the perimeter for outside shots. Strimback continued his fantastic defensive play, helping to shut down scoring from Boise's set position and forcing Boise to do their scoring from either the perimeter or fast breaks.  Mason Curry continued to make excellent progress in goalie, knocking down multiple shots from Boise.

Women’s Division: The Kroc/CDA Girls JV team had an early round game against the Boise varsity team, losing 12-9. The girls JV squad also played a Boise boys JV team Friday evening and were able to outplay them to a final score of 13-7.

The Kroc/CDA girls varsity team looked very strong throughout the tournament. The CDA squad had an early round game against Magic Valley, winning easily 13-3 after jumping out to an early first-quarter lead.

In the girls 3rd place championship game, the CDA girls JV squad played Magic Valley varsity. In what turned out to be a very close game, the girls played aggressively but ultimately weren't able to overcome the more experienced Magic Valley squad. Jillian Provost had a breakout game, leading all players with seven goals, including a number of 5-meter penalty shots. Libby Montgomery added two goals and Greta Hover scored an additional goal. A number of players took turns at goalie, including Lauren Watson, Greta Hover, Claire Thorpe, Jaelei Davis and Keelie Halsted.

In the championship game against Boise, the girls varsity squad jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first quarter and steadily added goals throughout the game, finishing with a final score of 19-4. Gianna Gonzalez led the scoring with a breakout game of her own, scoring seven goals in the championship game.

Joslyn Dimitri forced Boise to focus on the set position by often double teaming her. Joslyn was still able to score four goals while working with two ejections for most of the game which kept her out of set for much of the second half. Simone Gonzalez covered the set position for much of the time in the second half. The focus on the set position opened up other players to scoring opportunities. Maren Hover had a variety of goals, scoring a total of three. Gonzalez had a couple goals from both the set position and on the perimeter. Jillian Provost also contributed a couple goals in the game.

Alena Gonzalez continued her fantastic goalie work, making scoring extremely difficult for Boise and the other teams. Lauren Watson also did some excellent work in goal in relief.

The team is looking forward to next year’s season. While Kroc/CDA will lose important players to graduation, including seniors Quade Castaneda, Jack Rigg, Grayson Hartfield, Joslyn Dimitri, Ryenne Ayers and Jaelei Davis, they have a strong JV group and are expecting a number of players from the team’s younger Development squad to move up. Water polo in Idaho is looking to expand next season as number of new teams are expected in Idaho next year, including teams from Twin Falls, Nampa, Pocatello, Rigby, Snake River, Bishop Kelly and a stronger Boise team working out of a large new pool facility opening this summer.

The Kroc/CDA club practices year-round at the Kroc Aquatic Center and is open to all junior and senior high school students in the area.
