Kids Book Club on library board agenda

| February 21, 2023 1:00 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — The Kids Book Club program is expected to be discussed by Coeur d'Alene Public Library trustees when they meet Wednesday.

Program book selections were criticized by some parents last month and are the target of an online petition that so far has 619 signatures.

Information on the Kids Book Club is listened under new business.

Clean Books 4 Kids is petitioning Coeur d'Alene Library to:

• Refrain from using LGBTQ+ for future Kids Book Club selections.

• For all future Kids Book Club and Storytime, include a “controversial topic” disclaimer on these event notices.

• Parents have a right to choose for their children but to do so they need to be fully informed.

At the Jan. 25 board meeting, then-board chair Katie Sayler read a statement regarding public comment.

“We serve all 50,000 Coeur d’Alene residents who represent many different religious and moral views. We respect and support each perspective and add reading materials for them as demand and budget allow," Sayler said.

The board is also scheduled to discuss its communication policy at Wednesday's meeting that is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. in the Library Community Room.
