LEWISTON — At the site of their lone regular-season loss last season, the Lake City Timberwolves led the Lewiston Bengals by just two points at halftime Tuesday night.

But the second half was a different story, and Lake City, the top-ranked team in 5A, pulled away for a 73-49 Inland Empire League victory.

“It’s easy to say this now, but I’m kinda happy how the game went,” Lake City coach Jim Winger said. “We hadn’t been tested in a while. We were in the same exact position last year, and got beat.”

This year, Lake City (19-0, 7-0 IEL) outscored Lewiston (12-6, 4-4) 23-9 in the third quarter, 45-23 for the half.

Blake Buchanan had 21 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots for Lake City. Nathan Hocking added 17 points. Deacon Kiesbuy, who gave the T-Wolves a big spark in the third quarter, finished with 15 points and five rebounds, and Kolton Mitchell had 13 points, five assists and four steals. Zach Johnson also had five assists.

“We had to respond; last year we didn’t respond,” Winger said. “The second half we executed, and the first half we did not execute anything. We weren’t focused in the first half; we were completely out of position defensively. The second half was well-executed; it (the lead) went from 2 to 24 pretty fast.”

Carson Way scored 14 points, Jordan Bramlet 13 for Lewiston.

Lake City plays at Sandpoint on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

SANDPOINT — The visiting Timberwolves had two starters out due to injury and another one out due to already reaching his match limit, in the loss to the Bulldogs on their senior night at Les Rogers Court.

“We were down a few guys, but the kids wrestled hard,” Lake City coach Corey Owen said. “It was definitely a winnable dual; just some mistakes cost us.”

Owen praised the effort of Caden Dutra (145), who avenged a loss to Christian Troumbley-Karkoski at the North Idaho Rumble by edging the Bulldog 5-4 in the final match Tuesday night.

“Pulled out a really good one at the end,” Owen said. “Definitely nice to get one back.”

Lake City returns to action a week from Saturday at the 5A Region 1 tournament at Coeur d’Alene High.
