David Adler and other notable speakers will share their thoughts and expertise Feb. 25 during the Hijacking Democracy Symposium.

The event will be presented by the Kootenai County Democratic Central Committee.

“Now more than ever, we need elected officials who are champions of democracy, who reject partisan extremism and who lead with ethics," said Evan Koch, chair of the Kootenai County Democratic Central Committee.

Two panel presentations, with time for questions, are planned.

The morning session will be "Hijacking Democracy: Cause and Effect in Idaho and Nationally." Participating in this panel will be: Luke Mayville from Reclaim Idaho; Sarah Lynch from North Idaho Pride Alliance and also an attendee at United Against Hate; Idaho House of Representatives Minority Leader Rep. Ilana Rubel, D-Boise; and Adler, a prize-winning professor, author, Constitutional scholar and international expert on economics.

The afternoon session will be "Case Study: North Idaho College/Local Issues and Challenges." Adler will moderate. Other panelists will be Teresa Borrenpohl, past candidate of Idaho House District 5, Post Falls educational funding advocate and past NIC employee; Christie Wood from the Kootenai County Task Force on Human Relations and past NIC board member; Sarah Martin from the NIC Workforce Training Center; and author and Coeur d'Alene City Council member Dan Gookin.

"Though this is being sponsored by the Kootenai Democrats, this is not designed to be a partisan event," the symposium committee stated in a news release. "Our hope is to have bi-partisan, cross-partisan and non-partisan representation on our panels to show that we are above the political divide. What happens nationally, locally and at North Idaho College effects our entire community."

The Kootenai County Democratic Central Committee's goal is to create a meaningful and educational symposium that is thought-provoking and inspirational to the attendees and the community at large. With so much apprehension in the community of things to come, this kind of public discussion will provide a forum for understanding and offer an outlet for community connections.

The symposium runs from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Red Lion Hotel Templin's on the River, 414 E. First Ave., Post Falls. A light buffet and beverages will be offered. Music and video presentations are also planned.
