RATHDRUM — Junior Neil McCarthy hit some big 3-pointers in the third quarter and big free throws late, scoring 15 of his 18 points in the second half as the Post Falls Trojans held off the Lakeland Hawks 60-52 in Inland Empire League play Saturday night at Hawk Court.

With Post Falls (4-15, 2-5 IEL) leading by three points at halftime, McCarthy hit a 3 to open the quarter, helping the Trojans build a 10-point lead.

After Lakeland (3-13, 1-4) cut the deficit to three, McCarthy hit back-to-back 3s to increase the Trojans’ lead to nine.

“He’s really the one consistent shooter on their team, and we just lost him,” Lakeland coach Tony Hanna said. “Those are the kinds of little things that (cost you).”

McCarthy also hit 4 of 4 free throws down the stretch to seal it for Post Falls, which has won two of its last three.

Scotty Hocking hit two 3s, both in the third quarter, and scored 17 of his 23 points in the second half for Lakeland.

Tyras Blake added 13 for Post Falls.

“They have some strong kids; they’re young but they’re strong,” Hanna said of Post Falls. “They had a size advantage and they used it well.”
