DIVIDED: Nation could lose ‘democratic ideals’

| December 31, 2023 1:00 AM

A serious split in our nation is reflected in all of our media forms and at all levels. The split seems to be between groups that oppose change and those who see change as a form of growth or improvement. That split is so serious that groups from each side of the issues are classifying the other side as enemies, often as enemies of the state, assuming that their position is, in fact the real, or natural historical position of the state even when that flies in the face of facts.

A great example of that are statements purporting to be quotes from the U.S. Constitution which can be confirmed as not that, merely by reading the Constitution. That is just one example of  the nature and breadth of the split. My concern is that, as the divide deepens a point of no return will be reached that will destroy our nation. The question is “will a majority choose to consciously or unconsciously follow the absolutist path?” which will surely lead, as so many countries have done in the past, to a loss of democratic ideals.
