HOLIDAY ENLIGHTENMENT: In the freezer area

| December 24, 2023 1:00 AM

Recently, to gather a few needed items I ventured into Costco; I had company. I parked where the old Black Sheep building used to reside and took the shuttle to the front door. Taking a deep breath, I looked both ways and signaled to enter into the main thoroughfare. Movement was restricted and I soon realized there were many unlicensed grocery cart drivers vying with me for the same limited space in the narrow-aisled maze. Some drivers appeared to have blinders on and moved way to quickly in the limited area. On the other hand, not knowing they were as much a hazard as the nimble folks, there were as many slow-moving operators, meandering oblivious to the hectic rush-hour traffic.

It soon became evident that I was the target of unwarranted road rage, so I pulled over into a safe location. Disoriented, but feeling somewhat safe and hoping to reengage soon, I took another deep breath. Just then, an unconscious driver bumped into the back of my cart. I turned quickly to survey the disruption and found a small line of carts, attempting to pass through my parking spot. Thinking I must get out of the way, but wondering how to not be in the way, I moved quickly into one of the large freezer areas, where carts seem to avoid.

Chilling in the freezer, I was cold, but able to reevaluate the wisdom of continuing on in this adventure. Then, a cool thought (pun) entered my thinking, “Maybe, it is not my friends shopping around me as much as it is my predisposition toward shopping?” Seeking forgiveness, I looked up and remembering, this is the Christmas season, I repented of my angst and calmed. Enlightened, I left the freezer with a smile and two words ready to share. The first opportunity to engage a fellow shopper went very well; I paused for them, smiled and said, “Excuse me.” They smiled back! With renewed vigor, and thankfulness, I moved willingly into step with my fellow shoppers. Merry Christmas.
