PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Unreal ending helps Vikings finish fifth at Tark Classic

| December 22, 2023 1:25 AM

LAS VEGAS — The ending was so unreal, that it was almost fitting for a team that rallied from an 18-point deficit.

Trailing by seven points with 40 seconds remaining, Coeur d’Alene hit a pair of baskets to cut the Durango lead to 59-56 with three seconds remaining.

Then, it happened.

“We pressed them and they were out of timeouts,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jon Adams said. “We got them down to four seconds, and when they tried to throw it in, they were aiming at Max Entzi’s feet and he caught it with his legs.”

Entzi then found Carter Rupp, who hit a tying 3-pointer at the buzzer.

In overtime, Kai Wheeler scored four points and Logan Orchard hit a pair of free throws as the Vikings beat Silverado of Las Vegas 80-72 in double overtime in the Spalding Bracket fifth-place game in the Tarkanian Classic at Sierra Vista High on Thursday.

“It was our last game down here and probably the best team we’ve played so far,” Adams said. “They were very aggressive and active and they jumped on us early. In the second half, we challenged our guys and played with the same physicality that they were. It was good to see our kids fight back.”

Rupp finished with 28 points for Coeur d’Alene (8-1), which faces Central Valley in the Central Valley Holiday Tournament on Wednesday.

Silverado is 7-4.
