PREP ROUNDUP: Rupp fires up Viking boys at Tark Classic

| December 21, 2023 1:15 AM

• BOYS BASKETBALL

LAS VEGAS — Junior Carter Rupp was on fire from deep for the second straight day, hitting 8 of 12 3-pointers and finishing with 29 points as the Coeur d'Alene Vikings (7-1) beat the Swordsmen (4-5) of Santa Fe Springs, Calif., 65-51 in consolation play in the Spalding Bracket at the Tarkanian Classic at Sierra Vista High on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Rupp was 7 of 12 from deep and scored 28 in a victory for the Vikings, now 2-1 at the tourney.

“We run a lot of things for him,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jon Adams said. “He’s constant motion, and our guys penetrate a lot and do a good job of finding him.”

Rupp hit three 3s in the first quarter and three more in the fourth.

“He hit some big shots tonight. Those were backbreakers,” Adams said.

Sophomore Caden Symons was undercut late in the first half on a breakaway layup and landed hard, his head hitting the floor. He missed the rest of the game and was examined for a concussion after the game, Adams said, but no symptoms were found.

Adams praised his replacement at guard, senior Trey Nipp, who “took really good care of the ball.”

Especially impressive because on the same play Symons was injured, at the other end of the court, Nipp took a shot to the face and suffered a split lip, and needed stitches afterward.

Senior Gunner Larson, who suffered an ankle injury just before tryouts, saw his first action of the season and played roughly 8-10 minutes.

Logan Orchard and Kai Wheeler each added 10 points for Coeur d’Alene, and Adams had praise for the 6-3 Wheeler for the second straight day, battling against bigger posts — on this day, guys standing 6-9 and 6-8.

“Kai Wheeler again held his own in the middle; he plays much bigger than 6-3,” Adams said.
