PREP BASKETBALL: Coeur d'Alene girls win opener at Tark tourney

Coeur d'Alene defeated Democracy Prep of Nevada 57-50 late Monday night in its first game in the Diamond Bracket at the Tarkanian Classic at Durango High.

Coeur d'Alene (8-2) plays tonight at 8:20 vs. with winner of a game this morning between Bonita Vista of California and Bingham (Utah).

SPOKANE — Lila Kiefer had 11 points and 11 rebounds as the visiting Hawks rolled to a 34-7 halftime lead en route to the win over the Highlanders of the Greater Spokane League.

“Lila Kiefer really stepped up tonight,” Lakeland assistant coach Caelyn Caulfield said. “Defensively she was all over the place, stealing balls … “

Landree Simon scored a game-high 18 points for Lakeland (4-4), and Payton Sterling added 11.

Mackenzie Marie Fager led Shadle Park (0-6) with 12 points.

MOSCOW — Senior Morgan Dickinson scored 12 points, and the visiting Tigers steadily inched away for a rugged nonleague win over the Bears at Bear Den.

“Morgan had a great game,” Timberlake coach Matt Miller said. “She finished around the hoop really well, had a couple post moves, and teammates found her as well.”

Junior Diana Nelson scored six of her nine points in the third quarter for Timberlake (7-2), which extended a 25-18 halftime lead to a 42-29 advantage. Jozee MacArthur scored 10 for the Tigers.

“The intensity and the effort in the game from both teams, it had a district-type feel to it,” Miller said. “Overall, I loved our effort and our intensity. It was a grinding game.”

Senior Punk Knott led Moscow (5-4) with 12 points.

Timberlake plays host to Lewiston on Wednesday.

Reese Strawn, Cason Miller and Carter Kloos each scored seven points for Lake City (4-2), which plays San Gabriel Academy of California today at 10:30 a.m. at Faith Lutheran.

Albert Philippe Ntungicimpaye and Alan Gballou each scored 17 points for Layton Christian (5-2).

RATHDRUM — Senior post Ben Ryan had 22 points and 11 rebounds as the Hawks downed the visiting Tigers in nonleague play at Hawk Court.

“He just has a motor, he stays after everything, does a really nice job of extending on his hook shot,” Lakeland coach Tony Hanna said. “The big difference in the game tonight was our size.

Our posts had 55 of our 72 points tonight.”

Sophomore Peyton Hillman, formerly a JV/varsity “floater,” got his first varsity start and grabbed 10 rebounds. He moved into the starting lineup in place of senior Toby Tebbe, who suffered a broken leg vs. Lewiston, and is out 6-8 weeks.

Gabe Harris scored 15 points, Ben Roth 13 for Lakeland (5-2), who played without point guard Mason Hensley (ankle). 

Tyler Engelson scored 20 of his game-high 28 points in the second half for Timberlake (2-6), and Jacob Yetter added 12 points. 

“(Engleson) and Yetter do a good job forcing the issue,” Hanna said.

Timberlake plays Genesis Prep on Thursday at The Courts at Real Life in Post Falls. 

Lakeland returns to action Dec. 28 vs. Skyline of Idaho Falls at the East Idaho Holiday Classic in Idaho Falls.
