PREP BASKETBALL: Wheeler, Orchard help Coeur d’Alene tune up for Tark tourney with win

COEUR d’ALENE — Kai Wheeler did his work inside in the first half, and Logan Orchard took over in the second half as the Coeur d’Alene Vikings downed the Bellarmine Prep Lions of Tacoma, Wash., 64-53 on Saturday at Viking Court.

With Bellarmine concentrating on Coeur d’Alene’s 3-point shooters, Wheeler scored 12 of his 14 points in the first half, including seven in the first quarter highlighted by two three-point plays for the Vikings (5-0).

Orchard scored 14 of his 22 points in the second half.

Coeur d’Alene shot 23 of 37 from the field, 15 of 21 from the line.

Mateo Garcia hit 4 of 7 3-pointers and led Bellarmine Prep (2-6) with 17 points.

Coeur d’Alene heads to Las Vegas for the Tarkanian Classic, opening Monday vs. Riverside Poly on Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Sierra Vista High in the Spalding Bracket.

COEUR d’ALENE — The host Timberwolves closed the deficit to three points early and late in the fourth quarter, but the Wolfpack made enough plays down the stretch to hang on for the nonleague win.

Junior Reese Strawn hit four 3-pointers and scored 16 points for Lake City (4-1). Freshman Jordan Carlson added 12 points for the Timberwolves, and Cason Miller and Braydn Arrieta each scored 10.

It was the first loss for Lake City since the consolation championship game at the 2022 state 5A tournament. The T-Wolves went 26-0 last year en route to the program’s first state title, and graduated most of those players.

Senior Eli Williams scored 14 points for North Central (5-1), whose interim coach is former Gonzaga standout Rob Sacre.

Lake City heads to Las Vegas to play in the Tarkanian Classic this week. The T-Wolves open Monday vs. Layton (Utah) Christian at 4:30 p.m. at Faith Lutheran High in the Nike Bracket.

LEWISTON — Freshman Derrick Chamberlain, who had a team-high 13 points for Sandpoint, was the only Bulldog to reach double figures in an Inland Empire League loss to the Bengals.

With 5:29 remaining in the second quarter, sophomore Logan Roos hit one of his two 3-pointers to keep the Bulldogs (3-4, 0-2 IEL) within reach, 26-25. However, the Bengals (4-3, 1-0) went on a 14-5 run to end the half and carried that momentum with them throughout the rest of the contest. 

Wil Leisy added a season-high six points for the Bulldogs.

Jordan Walker hit five 3-pointers and scored 17 points for Lewiston. Drew Hottinger also scored 17 for the Bengals.

Sandpoint will travel to Kellogg on Wednesday.

PLUMMER — Senior Brutis SiJohn had a half-dozen steals and scored 10 of his points in the first quarter as the host Knights ran away from the Spartans in nonleague play at Ron Miller Court.

“We went to a three-quarter-court press, and he got a bunch of steals off of that,” Lakeside coach James Twoteeth said. 

Sophomore Tyson Charley scored 21 points for Lakeside (4-0), playing for the first time in two weeks. Liam Hendrickx added 19 points, Blaze Callahan 14, Preston Spotted Horse 13 for the Knights.

“We were ready to play; we were just happy to have a game,” Twoteeth said.

Gavin Christopherson led Timberline (1-6) with 11 points.

Lakeside travels to a tournament in Wellpinit, Wash., this week, playing Inchelium (Wash.) on Wednesday.

COEUR d’ALENE — Senior Sophia Zufelt hit four 3-pointers in the first quarter and finished with 22 points for the Timberwolves in a win over the Wolfpack of Spokane.

“Sophia is shooting the ball really well right now,” Lake City coach David Pratt said. “She’s had a couple of games in a row where she’s been on. She’s doing a really great job right now.”

Senior Avery Waddington added 19 points for Lake City (10-1), which hosts University on Tuesday.

SANDPOINT — Senior Aliya Strock and freshman Jordyn Tomco each scored 20 points as the shorthanded Bulldogs beat the Bengals in Inland Empire League play at Les Rogers Court.

Tomco, who started in the absence of Karlie Banks (ankle injury), also had six rebounds and a team-high four steals for Sandpoint (7-1, 3-0 IEL). Freshman Brecken Mire had 10 points, four assists and a team-high eight rebounds for Sandpoint.

McKarcher posted 12 points and 10 rebounds for Lewiston (4-6, 1-4).

“I’m really excited for the girls because we’re now 3-0 in the league and those wins have all come against 5A schools,” Sandpoint coach Will Love said. “I thought we played well for 32 minutes. We were missing Karlie today due to an ankle injury so some roles changed a little bit, but everyone stepped up. Aliya had a great game — and then add in Jordyn’s scoring, Brecken hit double-digits — it was a great team win.”

Sandpoint will play Kellogg at home on Tuesday.
