TRI-STATE INVITATIONAL: Post Falls sits second after first day

| December 16, 2023 1:17 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — Post Falls, with two wrestlers advancing to the semifinals, is in second place after quarterfinal round at the 52nd annual Tri-State Invitational on Friday at North Idaho College.

Juniors Rider Seguine (120 pounds) and Seth Martin (170) advanced for the Trojans, who are seeking their first team title since 2019.

“Seth’s really been putting in the work in the wrestling room,” Post Falls coach Pete Reardon said. “He’s a little unorthodox in how he wrestles, but he’s getting more comfortable in what he’s doing. We expected he’d put on a good showing, and he’s done that.”

Post Falls had 137 points after the quarterfinal round. The Trojans have eight remaining in the consolation bracket.

Mead High of Spokane leads the tournament with 150 points.

“Mead’s in the driver’s seat with a little bit of a lead and some tough kids,” Reardon said. “We’re coming in the morning to fight for everything we can. It’s going to be an exciting day.”

Coeur d’Alene sophomore Rocco White (98) and freshman Brock Armstrong (152) advanced to the semifinals. Coeur d’Alene, with five remaining in the consolation bracket, is tied for eighth with Chiawana of Pasco with 100 points.

Armstrong beat Ivan Acosta of Pullman, who won the Spokane Open last month at 149 pounds, in the third round.

“Brock had a heck of a day for a freshman,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “He’s one of the better wrestlers in the state of Washington, and Brock did a good job of wearing him out of gas and getting the win. He’s just wrestling great right now. For a freshman, he did outstanding.”

“Our kids are learning how to wrestle in a tough environment,” Moffat said. “There’s nothing to be done about this day. We’re hoping to get all seven on the podium. To finish in the top five or six would be a good step in the right direction.”

Lake City Garrett Leonard advanced to the semifinals at 195 pounds, as did Lakeland freshman Carson Leonard (113) and Timberlake senior Luke Schell (182).

Semifinals are scheduled for today at 11 a.m.., with championship finals at 5 p.m.
