SPIRIT LAKE — 3A power Timberlake jumped out to an early lead on the reigning 4A champion Sandpoint Bulldogs on Thursday night.

Then the Bulldogs outscored the Tigers 33-19 in the middle two quarters, and held off the hosts down the stretch for a 58-53 nonleague victory.

“The tempo got away from us,” Timberlake coach Matt Miller said. “They controlled the tempo in the second and third quarter, speeding us up. They’re a really good team in transition. We started playing a little faster than we wanted to.”

Kursten McKellips scored a game-high 23 points for Timberlake (6-2), including 15 in the second half, 10 of those in the fourth quarter.

“She did a good job being aggressive and getting to the hoop, and keeping us close,” Miller said.

Aliya Strock scored 21 points, Karlie Banks 17 for Sandpoint (6-1), which was coming off a 32-point loss at Lake City on Tuesday. The Bulldogs made 6 of 8 free throws in the last minute-plus, including 4 of 4 by Strock, who finished with three 3-pointers.

Timberlake was 8 of 17 from the line.

“The girls played hard,” Miller said. “We had mistakes, but we had our chances.”

Timberlake travels to Moscow on Monday.

“Our ball movement was great tonight,” Lake City coach David Pratt said. “We did a nice job of moving it around and getting everyone involved. Lakeland presses and traps a lot, but we did a nice job all around, especially defensively.”

Senior Avery Waddington scored 10 of her 20 points in the third quarter for Lake City (9-1, 3-0 IEL), which hosts North Central on Saturday.

Junior Landree Simon scored 17 points for Lakeland (3-4, 1-3), which visits Shadle Park on Monday.

“Lake City’s a dominant team that’s played a lot of basketball,” Lakeland coach Tyrel Derrick said. “I like the level we’re playing at and the stuff we did. Against Lake City, if you don’t have some things that are going to rattle them, it’s not going to happen too often.”
